      OAA, any advice

I am ready to apply for my OAA but dont really want to book a back up accommodation incase i loose my deposit.

Am arriving in Sept, i have heard families get priority, what do you think our chances are as there are only 2 of us.

I know you dont get to know until 3 weeks before you fly, but am trying to sort out a time scale of when to send our furniture accross.

Any help or advice would be welcome.

      Hi

We found out a month prior to arrival that we hadn't got accommodation - not sure about prioritising families because it didn't help us, think it depends on no of people & availability.

We got OAA for 2 of us. It was a 1 bed unit & a bit grim but it did the job & was cheap at $170ish a week. We were lucky as it was only 15 mins walk to the CBD, close to the cafes & restaurants on Hutt St & Victoria Park. We stayed in it for 8 weeks so it saved us a bundle of money until we got sorted with a rental & our container arrived. We found out we had got OAA about 3 weeks before. We had no back up plan!!!

Not having a go at you directly MDB (ya never know we might meet up and I hate bad blood) but it seems a bit unfair on businesses to let them down.

This idea has been suggested before.

A lot of business here are operated by small families and they are doing it tough as well.:(

Not ment to be offensive lol, in winter these parks are quite empty, well the ones i have stayed in last winter, they get 3 weeks notice that the unit would or would not be taken and if not they get $150 for free! People have to make plans and who realisticaly could afford to pay out $ks on securing a private rental that they might not use. No offence intended

We have applied for OAA, a family with two small children arriving mid August. We did look into back up plans, but decided not to arrange anything (deposit was one of the reasons). It is low season so if we don't get OAA we're taking our chances of finding a holiday park or something and move housing higher up the priority list than with OAA.

Dont panic too much, we hadnt a clue where was was staying 2 days before we left the uk, and we being a family of 5, we waited til oz time, had a list of caravan park numbers to ring, and got a cabin from the first one from the list, we arrived in april tho so was winter, but sept its just turned into spring so i would think the caravan parks will have vacancies should you not get the oaa and u will have plenty time to find a caravan park with vacancies:):) 3 weeks is loads time compared to how we did it lol

All the best for your trip over :)

We got OAA (family of 5) and didnt have a back up plan. Found out 3 weeks before we got it and then found out address about 10 days before.

      Good luck with your application.
