Hiya BMW

The paperwork for buying a car is pretty standard here.
The dealer should take you through it and do ask if you don't understand anything.

Do bring your no claims bonus documents, the insurer will automatically give you what is called Rating one here.

There are loads of insurance companies but most are backed by 3 - 4 large ones.
We go through our bank who came out well (Bank SA).Also we get 5% discount as we have household insurance with them as well.

All sales of vehicles will incur Stamp Duty - even private sales.
Stamp Duty is paid up front when you purchase from a dealer and with private an invoice will be sent out from the registration centre.
Here is the Transport SA link and calculator...........

Always have a good haggle with the dealerships.

Enjoy ;)

hi tyke
yea transport charge 4% of purchase price of vehicle -60 dollars is the best way to work it but add again 20 dollars for admin fee, rego is in brackets 4 cylindert 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder but 4x4 incures about 50 dollar surcharge. hope that helps.to buy a car on uk licence is ok just need proof of address here when transfering to your name, within 14 days of purchase.

It took me ages to sort out my NC from the UK Insurer so definitely bring it over if you have it. The insurance company here agreed to give me the relevant insurance price upon proof of my NC but because it took so long they were actually going to cancel my policy !! Luckily I got an email attachment just in time & this was enough, the hardcopy followed a little later.
