Hi all,
I am a degree qualified structural engineer who is landing in Adelaide 17/08/08. The majority of my experience is design in the steelwork industry.
Can anyone give an advice on the best means of finding work i.e. recruitment consultant or direct to employers.
Many thanks.

Yes there is a mining boom at the moment - get a job working in that industry. I'm finding they can't find enough people to fill roles especially in Engineering so the money will be good too. Try the following websites:
www.bhpbilliton.com (http://www.bhpbilliton.com)
www.santos.com.au (http://www.santos.com.au)
www.oxiana.com.au (http://www.oxiana.com.au)
www.riotinto.com.au (http://www.riotinto.com.au)
www.worleyparsons.com.au (http://www.worleyparsons.com.au)
www.fluor.com (http://www.fluor.com)
www.skmconsulting.com.au (http://www.skmconsulting.com.au)
www.pb.com.au (http://www.pb.com.au)
www.builtenvirons.com.au (http://www.builtenvirons.com.au)
www.ghd.com.au (http://www.ghd.com.au)
www.theiss.com.au (http://www.theiss.com.au)
www.leed.com.au (http://www.leed.com.au)
This will give you a start in looking. Generally the jobs will be listed on www.seek.com.au (http://www.seek.com.au) and www.careerone.com.au (http://www.careerone.com.au) and through agencies but because of the shortage of skilled workers, they will advertise through many means. I have found agencies are not particularly helpful as they only want to fill a position and it doesn't matter what skills you have as long as they get the job.
Try applying direct if you can for a permanent job. You may have to work as a Contractor - generally Contractors are paid 20% more than the permanent employee to counteract for the unpaid leave, public holidays and sick days - this is different from temping as you are paid a fixed hourly rate no matter how many hours you do and you could be working around 55 hours a week. I've just been working as a Contractor for one of the companies listed above and was also entitled to the company bonuses - I decided to leave for a permanent job also at one of the companies I have listed because the money was the same.
I have posted some links to agencies who specialise in mining on another thread if you are interested.
It is also good to have contacts in the industry as they can put you forward for roles as and when they arise. Adelaide has a small town attitude and generally will only give jobs to those already in the industry or to their mates but once your foot is in the door, you are laughing.
Hope this helps. PM me if you want.
