View Full Version : nurse to patient ratio's
Just thought i'd ask out of interest, are there any nurses on here that know what the nurse to patient ratio's are like at the Royal Adelaide hospital. I know it is highly dependent on particular specialites and if it helps i will be on gynae/urology. Just one of those questions i wanted to ask at the interview but kind of got swept away in the whole process. Any feedback would be great even from other specialities. Thanks in advance.

when I was at the RAH, doing my GNP on a medical ward there were upto 6 patients per RN up to 10 if you had an EN working with you. On the surgical wards I think it was less about 4 patients I think, but it depended how far post surgery they were. Now I work in PICU and I have either 1 patient or max of two depending whether intubated or not.

The Barbie does sound great but a bit a vodka for me please. I think i'm going to start trying wines seen as Adelaide is meant to have the best.

Hi All, I am hoping to get out early March next year, got a job at the QEH via O'Grady Peyton. At moment working on Acute Male Surgical ward, but due to bed shortages its more like a medical/orthopeadic ward. I can't believe how many nurses and wanting to escape the NHS. I would be great to all meet when we finally get over to Adelaide.

Hi Cara
Promise i will try the wine. I have sent back my visa nomination application form and all my bits have been sent to the NBSA. Things are moving (although theres a long way to go yet). I bet you've got your forms all filled out and ready to go. Hope that PIN gets to you soon.

Hi Jo
Congrats on the job, i know to well what you mean about bed shortages, lets just say i didn't realize before i started on gynae that it involved things like medical patients, ortho patients and i had no idea that the appendix was a gynaecological problem, it can be so frustrating:arghh:. At the end of the day we are all fighting for our patients but a phrase that often pops into my head is banging my head against a brick wall. Sorry i'll stop ranting now. Anyway well done again and hopefully like you say we will all meet up when we get there.
Take care.

What a very good idea Skimbles, maybe i will start doing some research in the wine area to. Sounds like quite an enjoyable research project :biglaugh:.

Hi Ems and Skimbles I think I might start sampling some of the SA wines myself, just to be sociable, cant have you two drinking alone, we could all compare notes.
Enjoy

Hi Emma,
My advice::: Chill white wine in freezer before, makes a lovely cold drink... I have no worries about converting (thats the problem). Enjoy your week off and enjoy trying it out.

Funny you should mention Wolf Blass Skimbles, I had a couple of glasses of the Eaglehawk Rose yesterday and it made me feel quite merry, so I think I can recommend this to my fellow researchers:jiggy:Enjoy! I've got a set of 5 nights now so will have to put further research on hold till next week, Emma enjoy your week off and good luck with your research.
Jo
Cheers guys.
I'm looking forward to this research and keeping my fingers crossed the weather holds out so i can have some days in the garden to. I will be taking your advice cara and putting the wine in the freezer first.
Your weekend sounded great skimbles, unfortunately my weekend was spent at west suffolk hospital on a nice hot ward.
5 nights, that sounds awfull, hope it goes quickly for you jo.

poor you xx you will have to make up for it when you are off!!
Hi guys
Well i only managed to try one of the oz wines this weekend and that was wolf blass (white). I did enjoy it but couldn't drink it all night like my vodka. Unfortunately after 5 glasses of wine i did convert back to vodka for the rest of the night along with a few cocktails and shots in there to,i don't drink that much normally promise, it was a hen night in London. :biglaugh: As you can probably imagine my memory of the night is kind of bits here and there . I'm still recovering today but i will have a look at more tomorrow, i need to make the most of my time off as its really not the sort of research you can do whilst working (although we did think we should've taken some cannulas and bags of fluids with us for when we got back to the hotel in the early hours).
I'll stop babbling now, anyone recommend the next bottle i should buy?

Rawnsley Estate is a decent one!!
Money has been taken for my NBSA application!! Still No viewings on the house! Think I will do an open house ply people with drink invite them to use the heated pool and not let them, out until they buy!!! LOL
KR Kim x
I'll go and have a look for that one tomorrow cheers Kim. The money has been taken from me to, another v. small step gone by.
The open house sounds like a great idea, would you mind if i came along even though i wouldn't be buying. I really wouldn't mind being plyed with drink in a heated swimming pool, the only thing is where do you stand with getting someone to sign a contract when you've got them drunk :biglaugh:
Seriously though, i hope you get someone soon, i bet theres nothing worse than being stuck in England for that.

Hey Rachel
I think we have got a bit carried away haven't we. Do you think it makes us nurses look like were drunk all the time :biglaugh:.

Hi Guy's back in the land of the living finished my nights and off for 9 days, so I can re start my research, I think it would be a good idea to start a new thread regarding wine. I was just thinking we had hijacked this thread. sorry!
Are you going to start it off Emma?

Hi Jo
Yes i will start one of right now, before i get side tracked again. I think an ideal place for it will be the barbie, seen as i think it was cara's comment about the wine and beer at the barbie and mine about the vodka that started this of.

hi skimbles,
Just been looking at all the form's and am struggling with the Occ health one, our we meant to get this done by G.P... Might sound thick but is it a full medical, as like you said we will need to do another one for visa!!! Had email to-day asking for the forms to be sent back by next thursday. No way i will have them done if G.P has to do it.
Thanks in advance

Was also asked for the nomination form back (which I emailed back on the 9th April the day it was sent out to me!!).
Also asked about PR as concerned we will pay out a lot of money and then not be able to get it when we are there!
Still no viewings for the house!!! Arghh

Hi Kim and Cara
I completed mine a while back as i didn't have a clue when they wanted it returned. I think you only have to have it completed by the G.P if there is a ? over any part of fitness to practice:unsure:. I wasn't sure as i have an old whiplash injury which occasionally flares up. I went to the G.P and the price i was told kept creeping up, eventually ended up at 75 pounds (as i had two forms). I basically told them not to bother and went to the pain specialist at West Suffolk Hospital as i had seen him a couple of years ago and he done it for free. So glad i didn't rely on the G.P.
As far as i'm am aware regarding PR i'm sure i heard that the hospital has said they would put us through for it after 3 months (providing they like us), and it will then possibly take around 9 months to do. Again it is best to double check this with O'Grady as not completely sure.
Still keeping the fingers crossed for your house.

Hi all,
I also have to the same forms as skimbles.. I had them sent to be afew weeks ago. It does say either GP or doctor at hospital where you work, so asked to-day and one doc said he would fill it out for me, then went down to the ENT ward and asked doc there if he would do eye test, which he said he would........ It is all so confusing!!!! Skimbles i was also told at interview that if hosp like you and you like them then they will sponsor you for PR visa after 3 months.
So much paperwork..... Still be worth it girls when this time next year we sitting in garden havin barbie in the sun, sharing our wine research... Doing some research later!!!
Good luck girls we will get there eventually

Unfortunately I dont work in a hospital and do not work alongside any Dr's. I teach GP's and practice nurses but only see the gp's once or twice so not long enough to ask them to fill it in.

Sounds like a good idea renting the property out, at least you can still be making money back in the U.K for a while.
I wasn't sure about looking myself for jobs as thought originally it would be loads of paperwork, not so sure now. I'm sure i could have done it.
Good luck with the move, 11th august really isn't that far away.:D
