I'm really not sure on the answer but thinking about it, if you were using a family members address in the UK and were paying the loan how would they know or query it!!

Hi
A friend who is a financial advisor told us he advisd one of his friends who emigrated not to bother paying his credit cads off cos they wouldn,t be able to trace him unless he came back to england which would take a while anyway. However he did say loans are a different matter so be careful

We have a lot of debt that we will not be able to pay off until we sell our house and we wont sell the house until after we get the visa !!!
I am not telling you to 'do a runner' without paying what you owe (although sometimes I wish I had the nerve) but if you are planning on continuing paying your debts why would they even look at your account, lets face it banks and financial institutions don't care as long as they are getting back what they expect

I have 2 uncles there and have been there on hols once but stephen and the kids haven't. My family are in Salisbury and Salisbury Heights (north Adelaide) so will stick to somewhere near them to begin with. We have been thinking about it for 6 years but I never had the guts to make that final decision even now i am terrified but have to give it a go. We have a case officer and meds sent so matter of waiting now. We are putting the house up in May so will go when it's sold as can't afford to go without selling it

This is interesting, I still have a uk credit card, maybe when I go back to visit I will stay at the Savoy and hire a limo then post it back to them.:)
Simon:):):)
We paid all off before leaving.
We'd bought some nice furniture before leaving and they threw finance at us.
Tempting as it was it all was paid off.Just in case they could come and get you/give probs here or await your return.
Glad we did as we have had to make several trips back to the UK for family illness issues. We felt a lot easier about things.
Sleeping easy was one of our goals here.
International boundaries are shrinking daily and I reckon it's only time before a "Global credit history" evolves.

My sis is a top boss at experian so knows all about this. After 7 years your debt is written off. The chances are the company your debt is with will write it off if its under 5 grand - HOWEVER there is nothing to stop the company selling on the debt to a third party who can track you down - apparently companies are developing more and more sophisticated ways to track you down.
We owed about 4 grand on our egg credit card and my sis told us that company is a bugger for getting you.
We paid it off as the thought of a knock at the door in the future and the worry of always looking over your shoulder worried the hell out of me.
At the end of the day I couldn't have lived with myself knowing I'd taken money and not paid it back.

Just to through a spanner in the works:wacko: not sure the question should be can you leave them but should you leave them!!!:policeman:
We all know banks/credit card comp. will get their money back one way or another and if you walk leaving debts they will re-coup the outlay by giving some pore s*d (who has worked just as hard always payed his debts and is probably worse off than you) extra charges/ higher fees/ higher intres rates. Not sure leaving 20/40k debts is anything to admire!!!!!

Personally I believe if you take on a debt -it should be repaid - no matter how much money the company makes.
I think its just plain wrong to take money without paying it back.

Apparently after 5 years your debt is written off
God I wish I had the B***s to clear off without paying my credit cards, that would add an extra bedroom to our house in Oz;)
But I know if I did it would be 'Murphy's Law' that we would fail in Oz and have to come home and never get a mortgage again:arghh:

You will all need to bare in mind if thinking about a loan ( and intending to repay it )We know someone who has actually done this. at the time the thought of paying back fifty pounds a week isn't too bad . Once living and working in oz it is a bit more of a strain finding $130 a week.
My advice would be to come with a clean slate and work your way up.
Good luck.

What an interesting thread - have been away for a while and enjoyed reading this one
My two bobs worth is that if you obtain a loan without intending to repay it, it is fraud - obtaining funds under a false pretence - therefore not a civil matter but a criminal one. If you leave without repaying an existing loan it remains a civil matter.
One of the conditions of our visa is that you are of good character.
Probably not worth it in the long run really. Besides - is the Shiraz not a bit cheaper over there?

Sammie wanted to know if he could leave an outstanding loan in the UK with every intention of paying it from Oz.
Not paying our debts was a joke that seems to have been taken seriously by some people

Hey dont't run off, just a friendly discussion of opinions, i would guess they got on that line of thought because it something that may have crossed their minds at some point. Who wouldn't like to run away and escape that dastardly credit card bill (or three), by the same token who wouldn't like to win the lottery. All passing thoughts. personally i'll be paying mine off and going with a clean slate although it will be very painful i'd rather start with next to nothing than less than nothing. Hey might even learn to live without a credit card!!!! now thats more scary than emigrating. :chatterbox::chatterbox:

There's no need to apologise to anyone. Keep your posts coming there's alot of help available on here which can save you money in the end and its also a good way of getting to know people before you go. By the look of the amount of views your posts add and continues to have it was/is a very interesting subject to many.

I have just read this thread from beginning to end and found it fascinating reading!
Let's be totally honest, the idea has crossed all our minds even if it is only to say "I couldn't do that" or "I wouldn't dare".
But this thread also highlights a lack of care on the part of the users...some people responded purely to the title and didn't bother to actually read what was being asked. Sammie asked if she could pay her debts from Aus so she didn't have to clear them all before she left and had a buffer being repaid slowly. Good planning, I would say.
Certain topics prompt 'emotional' responses and while it is easy to air them with no face to talk back to, my feeling is that someone's face is reading it and just because I can't see it, it doesn't mean I have the right to cause any hurt or anger to that face.
Sammie, you didn't do anything wrong. Thanks for posting and I hope we see/ hear lots more from you.

Lots of threads often go off at a tangent. This one included.
Most threads on debt often end up as this one did. However I thought this thread was very civilised compared to some on debt that I've seen - most notably british expats where it often ends up in a slanging match.
Try to take everything that is said with a pinch of salt.
Once you get to know us better - you'll realise we are a very friendly bunch of whinging poms!

Personally I thought it was all just a bit of banter with no malice meant and no hard feelings from anyone concerned I wouldn't think. Let's be realistic just because we're all wanting sunnier climes better lifes etc doesnt' mean we're all holier than though afraid to say a wrong word to anyone in the process of getting over there .I would much rather just be myself. Think this thread as been taken a little out of context by a few.
