If you're not sure exactly whereabouts to put down your roots, to my mind, you have 3 options.

1. Go out there on holiday. Split your visit between having family time and checking the place out. Check out the schools, beaches, etc. By the time you're back in Scunnie you would have decided where to go.

2. Get your visa and go out and rent a place. Visit places and see if any areas are right for you. When you find the ideal place buy and move there.

3. Do tons of research on line. Google as much as you can. Try the aussie site http://www.google.com.au/ and click the 'pages from Australia' button on evey search. Look up schools, shops, hairdressing, plumbing, etc. Theres tons of stuff to get your teeth into. Have fun. It will kill a lot of time waiting for the visa to arrive.

I don't know if you intend to make a "reccie" trip over but if so you will need to narrow it down.

If you are researching on the net..................

A high proportion of Brits are settling in the southern suburbs.
Such as Woodcroft,Aberfoyle Park,Happy Valley,Hallett Cove,Seaford and Moana. Also to some degree the areas surrounding these (we live in Onkaparinga Hills).

Hope this helps.

We've got a O/S size map of Adelaide and surrounding areas on the wall by the computer. As we research on line or speak to people about areas we place markers either positive or negative. You soon build up a picture of not only place you like the look of but where they 'fit' in the greater scheme of things. We have marked the map with Hospitals, schools, transport routes and anything else we can think of. The only thing you can't find out is who your neighours will be.

Google Earth and google maps are also a good way of seeing an overview on the area. You can see distances from CBD, beach, hills and how built up an area is

Google Earth - http://earth.google.com/

Google Map of Adelaide - http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=south+australia&ie=UTF8&ll=-33.211116,137.373047&spn=6.478583,13.798828&om=1

We are aiming for southern suburbs and plan to have a good look around them when we arrive in a few weeks 8)
