Anzac Day 25 April is big here. Most councils have a dawn service at their local war memorial. Or head into town to the memorial on North Tce, opposite the library. The march starts around 9.30 and heads down King William St to the garden of Remembrance opposite St Peter's Cathedral, where a service is held. Over the last couple of years the amount of young people attending has risen as they realise it's not a glorification of war, but a time when the old soldiers group to remember their mates and their service and sacrifice is now recognised. That's why it is a public holiday. My son is 18 now and I couldn't imagine him volunteering and going off to the other side of the world to fight. His life has only begun.

Lots of people line the road and clap as they pass. There are also groups of nurses, and people from other countries. It will also be on TV. It's worth going even if you only go once.
