I think I'm managing to start to narrow down my search!!

I've been looking at the northern suburbs as I've been led to believe property is more affordable and work is plenty (my OH's a carpenter) - please correct me if I'm wrong. I've been looking at Highbury, Athelstone, Redwood and surrounding areas. Could anyone give me the lowdown on these areas such as facilities/amenities, schools, doctors, shops etc and if these areas are built up (I know there'll be no comparison to UK estates) or near to parklands/nature reserves. I'd like to be able to walk my dog without having to trek miles to get to some green!

Many thanks

Hi Nicky
I grew up in Tea Tree Gully which is the council area for where your looking. In Adelaide these area's would be called the North East suburbs. The area your looking at is quite a larger area so you will find everything from large shopping centres like Tea Tree Plaza to hospitals like Modbury. I personally loved growing up around Tea Tree Gully as it does have great sports facilities, there are many good schools there and if you want to go to the beach it is an effort but only 30-40 minutes away by car. You will be in the foothills of the Adelaide Hills and a bus service called the O'bhan runs into Adelaide city and only takes 15 minutes from Tea Tree Plaza.
There is a newish area called Golden Grove where you could also look.

We are moving back there in October and the North Eastern suburbs are on top of my list.

There are lots of parks and the linear park that runs along the Torrens (river) starts out there too. Housing is rarely more than 2 storey, but most in these areas are single, blocks of flats will rarely be above 3 storeys, so it isn't built up. Generally you can walk down the street and see the sky across the full horizon. You certainly don't get the feeling of being hemmed in.

Got to dash out right now, but when I get back I'll reply fully. Suffice it to say, Highbury is lovely. We have lived here for nearly four years now, and not regretted our choice of suburb once. We are right by Linear Park which is a fantastic place to walk dogs - and TTG Council is dog friendly, in that they allow dogs off lead in several places (such as aforementioned park). Will send you some photos if you like?

Gotta dash now though - laters!

Thanks guys.

And yes, thanks Diane, if you could send me some photos that'd be great. We're still hoping to come for a reccie in July but nothing's booked as yet. Unfortunately we're having a couple of hiccups this end but if we do actually manage to get over I'll pm you a line. There was mention of dropping in for coffee if the invitation still stands? I hope that doesn't sound cheeky!?!!

Hi Nicky
Course it's not cheeky and you'd be very welcome! Although I ought to point out that I have a hyperactive dog that will want to play with you while you're here!! (I'll shut her outside if she's a pain, honest!)
I'm putting together a suburb report on Highbury for the Home2Home newsletter at the moment, so will send you the draft version in advance.
While you're online though, other suburbs worth looking at around the same area are: Vista, Fairview Park, Tea Tree Gully, Wynn Vale, Banksia Park, St Agnes, Redwood Park, Athelstone (think you already mentioned that one), Dernancourt and Woodforde.
Highbury details on their way very shortly...
