hey peeps!!

finally landed in the land of oz last week so still running about trying to sort everything out, havent got medicare yet, before we flew out my 22 month old son was referred to an orthopedriatrician bout his legs (one leg turns in when he walks) and was told he would grow out of it and to come back in 12 months time (bit difficult being 12,000 miles away ha ha) but mothers intuition tells me sumthin has to be done so im looking at getting a second opinion. im aware that ill have to pay for this but was wondering how i go about getting him seen or does anyone actually know where any specialists are and is it the same as the uk where you have to be refererred by your gp, also (sorry bout all the questions) how much are we looking at paying roughly?

cheers for now

Yes usually your GP sees your child and refers you to the specialist. Mr Peter Cundy is a good paed ortho surgeon. he works out of the WCH (womens and childrens) and also privately at Memorial. He also wont operate unless necessary. When you see your GP ask for a referral to him.
If you go through the WCH you may have a wait but it will be free. A private consultation is usually a couple of hundred dollars, but medicare will refund a portion of this.

Hope it works out for you

Rachel.

I would say take him to a specialist here. My son was being treated in the UK and i was told he would grow out of his problems. Mother's intuition told me things were not as they should be. He is now being treated by a paeditrician here privately as we are not covered by medicare. $300 for initial assement and $225 for every appointment after that. A lot of money but worth it to have some answers. I suggest either using reccommendations or search the web, look at the womens and childrens hospital website. Phone or email and chat with the secretary. They have always been very helpful to me.
