Dog Sitting (based in the UK)

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help or has got any ideas.

My mum has booked to come to visit us in Oz for nearly 7 and 1/2 weeks, from Nov - Jan. She has a schnauzer dog who is about 10 years old. Unfortunately the lady who promised to look after the dog for her, (for free), now can't and my mum can't get anyone to have the dog.

So I'm looking for either dog sitters, or someone who just wants the company etc for a while, around hertfordshire area, (close to Stevenage) to look after her.

My mum has phoned local kennels, and they are reluctant to have her, as they say it is too long to have a dog put in kennels, plus they charge an absolute fortune. She phoned the local vets, to ask them and they didn't have any ideas, apart from kennels. She's asked everyone she can think of, but because it's over the xmas period, no-one can.

She wants someone kind, (her dog, is her baby) and reasonably priced (obviously my mum will cover all food and expenses). But really need it at a good price.

Just wondered if anyone knew of anyone that fits the bill, who would be interested or if anyone has any ideas.

Cheers :wubclub:

Do you have any other family there that can help? guessing not or they would be. How about Freda?

Hi Rach

No, she's tried all family members, and none can.

I know that in our local newsagents there are always people willing to look after dogs and there is always something in the vets. i would try going into the vets in your area again and have a look on the notice boards or even put a advert up in the local shops. There are companies that dog sit, once again go into the vets and ask. Sorry couldn't be more help.

You could try posting on agilitynet.co.uk there are lots of agility people all over the country that may know of someone that may be of help. They are all dog lovers and wouldn't normally leave their dog with just anyone.

good luck

Just wanted to say thanks for all the replies, so far.

Mum has tried the vets, with no luck, they just gave her the names of the local kennels (who are reluctant to look after the dog).

Thanks Heaps Good, for the website. Just had a look though, and she'd have to go for the Holiday fostering options, which at 16 pounds a night, would work out at least 800 pounds,:chatterbox: but probably alot more as they say they charge more for Christmas period. That's more than she paid for the flight, which she'll hopefully :wubclub: use to get her here. She was only coming, cos she got a cheapish flight, so can't really afford that option.

Really looking for a carer, which she could pay the food and expenses for (which my cousin was originally meant to do) and maybe a bit extra.

Thanks for all your ideas/suggestions though, really appreciate it.

It's just a big expense, that she really didn't account for

Will check out that site Lippy. Thank you.

If the dog's ok with kids, it might be worth her contacting local schools - all those families where the kids keep begging for a dog, promising they'll walk it every day - an ideal opportunity for the parents to "test the waters" as it were, and try out dog ownership before committing themselves to something permanent. Might be worth a try anyway...
