buying 2nd hand cars

hi there

I've been spending hours looking online at the cost for 2nd hand cars and where to get them from etc (gumtree included). I have to say that I am amazed and somewhat confused by the prices of cars in Oz...it amazes me that some 2nd hand small cars of about 4yrs old can be more expensive than a brand new larger car back in the UK. Also that 2nd hand small cars can be more expensive than 2nd hand larger cars sold in Oz.....very odd.

Anyway, I wanted to see if anyone on the forum (and I am sure that there will be) is able to explain this? Also, if anyone knows of any good car dealerships that specialise in used cars.....any tips or advise would be great.

Mark

2nd hand cars here are a lot dearer than the UK but apparently they hold there value more. Something to do with not rusting like UK cars. You also have to pay stamp duty when you buy a car and registration is dearer, mine cost me $595 for a year, there is no MOT here hence people driving cars that look like they should be scrapped.

Hi

As for second hand dealerships....just cruise North/North East Road, or South Road there must be approaching 50 dealerships on these roads alone!!!!

I was blown away by the amount of them, and yes second hand cars really hold their value.

is the stamp duty a percentage of the cost of the car? if so what is that? and what are car insurance costs like?

Have a look at this web page to give you an idea on stamp duty

http://www.strattonfinance.com.au/car-finance/learn/articles/motor-vehicle-stamp-duty-guide.aspx#SA

My car insurance for an 8 seater Mitubishi, fully comp was $650 for the year, but was told lately to try Budget car insurance as they are supposed to be a lot cheaper

I am sure this has been discussed many times before but sorry I am new. My question is - I have an 18 month old Mini that I have to now sell in the UK before moving out to Adelaide in 6 weeks. Is there any merit in exporting it to Oz? I know there are taxes and duties and the cost of transport etc but my Mini seems to be worth loads more in Oz than in London so cost of export is offset by greater 2nd hand value. Anyone else have experience of this?

Thanks
