Hiya Rich

Hope you are enjoying your first few days here :D

We do a lot of business with car dealers and know some good ones ( we also have a gift basket company supplying car dealers and real estate agents)

There are 3 places I can strongly recommend - I have had a word with them and asked them if they can be even fairer than normal to new arrivals. So you should have no fear of being ripped off, expect courteous service and have everything explained honestly with no pressure.

CMI Toyota Southside at Christies Beach. They sell new and used Toyota's (I'm on my 4th from them) .Also New and used Suzuki and other late model brands second hand.

Ask for Rudi Goldberger, he is a smashing chap and has lived in the UK for 9 years.

Peter James Motors 1095 South Road ,Melrose Park.

Selling all brands second hand and used 4 X 4's.

Ask for "Big Al" - he is a friend of mine, married an English lass.

A top bloke who is hilarious and always tells the truth - with no pressure.

Amber Car Sales, Near Cnr of South and Panalatinga in Morphett Vale.

Specialising in cars $10,000 and under. They do business with a lot of ex pats.

I know of a few more as well so if you are dealing with one particular company drop me a line and I'll see if I can help.

I cannot say publicly which are the bad ones but be wary of being pressurised and long talks about finance.Just walk away and don't forget you are not there to please the salesman or pay their wages. He will be the only one smiling if you do get ripped off.

Many times the car price is cheap but the finance will be painful.

I know an independent motor financier if you need one.Nice bloke and patient.

Jenno Financial Services.

He buys gift baskets from us.

Tell him it was Russell the gift basket bloke who sent you - might see a bottle from him.

Used vehicles are more expensive here as they last longer, sometimes you are better buying new if the difference is slight.

Not heard of No Frills are they based in the city???

Hi Rich,

I can agree with Tyke on Suzuki Southside as we got our Grand Vitara from them and they were great.

Also Rudi is a very knowledgable guy in the Toyota side.

Amber Car Sales is on Main South Road, Morphett Vale, just past the turn off for PIMPALA Road, not Panalatinga! Think Tyke might be a bit lost with his directions there.

See Vanessa or Steve at Amber, they are friends of mine.

DOH!!

Ta for the correction ;);)

Hi Tyke

Some great info there as we'll be looking for a reasonably priced second hand anything in the first 2 weeks we're there as we only have a rental for that time (do they take rentals in part exchange on second hand cars?;))

With only 6 weeks to go its all happening a bit fast.

:)

My friend bought 2 cars from Amber motors when they arrived and three months later, one of the cars needs a new engine and the other one they had to get a mechanic to look at it three days after buying from them.

perhaps i`ve got this wrong?

you have to pay tax to the govt on 2nd hand car purchases? 10%? but not on new cars.

perhaps not?

max:mad:

Stamp duty is payable on any vehicle sale - even private sales as I did learn recently. When you transfer over the registration the registration dept will send out a notice to you.

Quote RAA............

Stamp Duty

Stamp duty is imposed by State and Territory Governments on the transfer of ownership or purchase of a new or second-hand motor vehicle. Charges and the basis for levying them vary from State to State. Stamp duty is generally in the range of 2 to 6.5 per cent of the value of the vehicle. Stamp duty is a remnant of the 'old' tax system, and since stamp duty is imposed on the GST-inclusive price, it represents an inequitable 'tax on a tax'.

Each time the ownership of a car is transferred, stamp duty is payable and therefore this has a cumulative effect on price over the life of the vehicle.

unquote........

GST (10%) included in the price on new cars.

If you are a registered business you can claim this back after purchase - similar to VAT laws in the UK.
