Just to clarify, the server is a dedicated server and hosting costs amount to several thousand dollars a year.

Not really, such is the price of running a managed dedicated server which is hosted in Australia. (obviously cheaper options are available if I wanted to host the site overseas).

It's more related to the fact that I inherited the existing hosting arrangements when I took over the sites in November. There are 4 forums running on the server. It appears as though the server hadn't been suitably configured for the job.

Apache / php / mysql / xcache, vbulletin & vbseo have now all been reconfigured / optimised / tuned, so there shouldn't be any more issues in the foreseeable future.
