car insurance issues

Following on from Liz and Kris UK's post on their recent (minor!) car crash I was wondering what would happen if you were hit by a driver who only had Rego insurance? Do you have to take them through the courts to recover damages? Does fully comp insurance generally cover this? What about if you've only got 3rd party fire and theft equivilant? What about if they are poor or a student or something and have no money, are you stuck then and even if they are court ordered to pay you money, you will never see it?

Thank you if anyone can help, this is something that has puzzled me for a bit.

But you still have to claim on your insurance then and loose your no claims - what if you don't want to claim on your insurance, what then?

And what about the other way - if you hit someone and don't have more than rego insurance - how do they get the money out of you?

The accident still has to be reported to your insurance company, (their terms and conditions). If you don't wish to make a claim, then you have to bear the cost unless you can recover it from the other driver.

You don't always lose your no claims, sometimes it just goes back a year or two. Sometimes you are allowed to make one claim before you lose it. It depends on the terms of your insurance.

If you don't have insurance, depends whether they do. They either take you to court, or leave it up to their insurance company to reclaim it.
