Hi my name is peter and i have a daughter and my partner debbie we are planning are second visit to adelaide and we are not sure which areas we would like but we are looking at the modbury side of adelaide can anyone give us any details of surburbs within the area

Schools are very imoportant aswell as are daughter is 6 and i use to play professional soccer so i would like to carry on coaching(IN THE SUN)

We are a family of 6: myself,hubby and 4 young kids aged 3,7,8 and 10!I would be interested also to find out a few areas up north being MODBURY,PARA HILLS,HOLDEN HILL,HOPE VALLEY,PARADISE and MAWSON LAKES.Only visited the southern suburbs last June but hubby has a slim chance of a job offer up north now maybe and we don't know anything about the northern suburbs so any advise or info very much appreciated!!!

Modbury is a busy area, Tea-Tree Plaza right on the doorstep, plenty of shops and so much easier to get to than the city. I live about 15 mins drive south of Modbury in Northgate.

 

Golden Grove is near Modbury, very posh there also quite a few Brits in Golden Grove so I believe.

My Hubby a Telecom Engineer and as you may have read on here there is a problem getting into Telecom work over in Adelaide!Which is concerning us a lot!He;s thinking of trying to get something else under his belt asap whilst still here in the UK as another option.Giving up a good secure job here which wouldn't be as scary if we didn't have the 4 kids to think about!I think you and your partner will be fine though!When do you plan to make the move for good.Must be a blessing having family over there already(at least you won't starve until you get a job!!)

Weather is so bad here in UK makes you realize why life must be so nuch better in oz!If nothing else just to leave this dam miserable weather behind!

Not sure whereabouts you are but there is a "meet up" week today 27th at Mascrat Manor Warrington.

We've not been to one of these before as quite a few others haven't so really looking forward to it.

Have a chat with other families also heading for Adelaide!

Aswell when i visited in july i stayed in vista with family and went to the plaza a few times which was nice life seems layed back and i went to a local soccer club in parafields which had a nice family feel to it everything about the area was brilliant:jiggy:did you come from the u.k and where did you live and have you got use to the weather:wacko:

Morning Pete,

 

Being in the RAAF we don't really have much say in where we live but Northgate is nice yes, they're just extending by building a new estate http://www.elton.com.au/talknorthgatest3p1/ right opposite Woolies about 5 mins from our house.

 

There is a super-school (R - yr 12) less than 5 mins walk from our house but my children don't go to that school because I didn't want them in the same school, I didn't want Cheyenne (7) clinging to Tori (16) I wanted Cheyenne to find her own way and her own friends so Cheyenne goes to Northgate Primary (about 5 min drive) and Tori goes to Ross Smith High School (about 10 min drive). Both schools are very multi-cultural so our girls didn't actually stick out like sore thumbs on their first day.

 

I guess if you wanted to find a disadvantage to Northgate then it would be thats it's right over the road from Yatala Prison but we figured if someone was going to escape then they wouldn't cross the road to hideout.

 

The nearest beach is Semaphore (sp?) it's straight along Grand Junction rd, about 15-20 mins drive depending how you catch the traffic light's. Northgate also has it's own community website http://northgate.com.au/home.php I must admit that I've not really had a good look at it yet though but I will in case I can advertise my Girl Guides on it (I'm always looking for girl and adults to join us). I only really know two of my neighbours, the family next door (white South African's) and the family over the road (military).

 

Yes Pete we are ex-pats, Birtish born n' Bred, we've been in Oz for 3 years now but the first 2 were spent up in QLD, the weather isn't so much of a hurdle here iif you have AC but the winter's can be very cold, not so much outside but inside, aussie homes are so open plan (for summer living) that they're hard work to heat and keep warm in winter.

We lived in Modbury North for the first 18 months that we were here before moving to Salisbury Heights. I can recommend it as an area. There was a big influx of british migrants in the 70's and most of the houses in the area are older style but on bigger lots so plenty of room for the kids. Northgate and Oakden can be a bit cramped in I feel personally, you definately get more for your money

 

Its very convenient to get around. Tea Tree Plaza only 5 minutes away and lots of doctors, dentist, opticians to choose from. There are also lots of car repair places, DIY shops, fast food, cinema etc. Over the road from the Plaza is the Centrelink Office for all your rent assistance and child benefit applications. The medicare centre is in the Plaza and there is a car registration place in the same building as the Centrelink office where you can change your car licence over and register your car. There is a State Swim centre at Modbury North for swimming lessons and Waterworld swimming centre run by the council, open seasonally Oct - Mar, 3 pools and a water slide, it costs roughly $4 to get in. I love it.

 

There are a number of soccer clubs locally. Modbury Soccer Club is the most well known I would say, they are at Ridgehaven just by Waterworld. http://www.modburysc.org.au/

Suburbs to look at surrounding the Modbury area, Redwood Park, Tea Tree Gully, Valley View, Para Hills, Para Vista, Hope Valley, Modbury Heights and Ingle Farm.

For Schools I would definately take a look at The Heights at Modbury Heights.

Lots of people I know send their kids there and you have the advantage of staying on one site until she leaves. It also has the only space observatory in a school in Adelaide. Golden Grove Primary is a great school, lots of english kids go there,

Gill - I'd give Holden Hill a miss, housing is cheap there for a reason, its a very old suburb on the very busy North East Road, check out Dernancourt instead, its the suburb next to Holden Hill and Hope Valley is the other side, another good place to have a look at. Wow Jo Thanks so much for "all" your info!That must have taken you ages to type out so i really appreciate you taking the time to do so!I've made a note of everything and will put it all to great use!

I do have written down somewhere term times compared to schools here but can i find it!No!

Don't suppose you could help?If we are hoping to come out this August i'll be wanting to get the kids into a good school asap and get them mixing with other kids and hopefully start making new friends!If they are all happy then i'm happy(makes life so much easier).my eldest will be 11 years old this June and would have been starting High School here in the UK this Sept I presume he will still do so in Adelaide but not until the following Jan 09.My next will be 9 years old this march and she would have been starting year 5 in UK this Sept,next i have a 7 year old(not 8 until Nov)he would be starting year 3 this Sept in UK & finally i have Matthew who will be just 4 years old this August.If we stayed in the UK he would "have" to start full time mainstream school this Sept although i really don't think that he will be ready.What would he be entitled to(would he still just do kindy for a few mornings)and when would he be expected to start full time schooling?

You'll be coming in half way through the school year as we did. (we arrived in June) Your Eldest who is 11 will probably go back into year 6 My eldest daughter was 11 (12 in Sept) when we arrived and went back into year 6 and completed the year. I could have pushed her into year 7 but lots of schools have mixed year groups, say a 5/6 class or a year 3/4. I thought redoing half the year would give her some confidence with the work and allow her to make some friends just in case they mixed classes at the end of the year. My middle one was 9 (10 in the Sept) and went into a 3/4 mixed class. The hardest thing for me to get round was that hey were always the eldest in the Uk being Sept birthdays and here they are amongst the youngest.

 

Basically with all the school age kids you'll be looking at redoing the year they will be leaving in the UK. As most schools here are Reception t Year 7 they will all be on one site.

Once you have decided which school you like, have a chat with the Principal as they are very open to moving te kids up a year dependant on their work and most kids tat come from the UK are advanced as the Curriculum there is much stricter. When we arrived Natalie was doing work in year 4 she'd been doing in year 2, I think it was something to do with telling the time but you just have to forget all that went before you and concentrate on whats happening now. "In England" is a phrase you have to put away and not use.

 

Now Matthew will have to go back into Kindy as they don't take them to school here until they are 5. Unlike the UK where there is only 1 intake a year, the kids come to school all through the year. This means Matthew will probably only do 2 terms of Reception and then go to year 1.

 

As the Uk there is 4 sessions of Kindy a week of 2 1/2 hours. You can either do morning or afternoons or if you are working, some Kindys do 2 whole days with a lunch break.

you have to pay for Kindy here, its roughly $55 - $65 a Term (10 weeks). There is no Government funding but you do get discounts on Childcare depending on the family income. some are actually on the school site which makes life easier and there are others in separate locations.

 

you can access all sorts of areas from that Education website and I think there is an area to cotact them by email, I'm sure they can help you.

Hi, I lived in Modbury on Elwood avenue in 1968 til 1971 this is when I was 1 until I was 3 when we came back home to England. My parents can t remember what number it was but apparently it had a tin roof in those days. Wish I was still there as the uk is the pits . Apparently this was called clovercrest estate?

Does anyone know this road? Aparently there were a lot of brits when we were there. I believe we went out on the 10.00 pound but my dad worked for speedograph in the uk who had a place out there.

My dad died 2 years ago and ended up with a different job he was a trained mechanic and it must have been a great trade at the time because we emigrated back on a cruise ship that went round the world. Sadly we moved back because of my mum feeling homesick, but they got divorced shortly after. My dad regretted ever coming back and would talk often about his experiences. Hi, thanks for response. Any idea on prices of houses in that area? From what I understand when my mum was desperate to move back to uk we sold Elwood Avenue and did lose a lot of money and rented a house on I think Corroberie Drive until we had saved the money back that had been lost. This was something to do with at the time if you bought a new property from a developer [instead of a second hand one] and sold it early you lost a lot of money. Dad always kicked himself at the time for not buying older property, but as new folks he didn t know.

On the old cine I have us as afamily at an old fasihoned water park and everyone pitched tents [i guess for shading]. Dad did say that everything was based outside and that was the social life. I think that a lot of incomers from England lived around us [this didn t help my mum settle as everyone spoke of English things]

I wish that we had never moved back and so did my dad in his later life. Still, I guess thats life

Prices in the Modbury North area have been consistently lower than other suburbs around it. However this year prices have started to rise and I guess you'd be able to get a 3 bed for around $280,000 rising to $350,000 - $400,000 depending on which side of Modbury North you are looking and the age of the property and how much work needs doing on it.
