Just to make people aware that there are more email hackers about than ever. We've just been subject to one from some little cretin and before you ask, no, we did everything we were supposed to.
Apparently we were in Manila (Philipines) according to email sent to all our contacts, on holiday and had been robbed and were lucky to have our lives and passports but could not afford to pay our hotel bill. The email then asked for money and to ring the contact numbers at the bottom of the email.
We had three calls in just as many minutes, from friends in UK and Sydney telling us about it as we had no record of it. It changed the appearance of our mail, moved emails, deleted contacts and worried friends and family. Luckily it was quite choosy and did not send it to customers.
We deleted all the emails that we had about work after printing them, notified the service provider for the second time, changed the password and then shut the account. Also changed every single email / password we had on everything. We also went to the police as were worried aobut the phone numbers - they could do nothing but said that there has been a spate of it lately and just logged it on the system.
We've always run virus checks and malware, maybe not as often as we should, should have changed passwords a bit more often too. Been a bit of a learning curve. All our contacts were in there, some in the address book and some not.
Think going to rely on technology a little less from now on like we used to before mobile phones, computers and the such like and go back to writing down phone numbers, addresses and email addresses so won't lose the important things again.
Apart from that all tickety boo after several wines and whines which made it all the more bearable. Just be careful you don't get stung too.
