We're in Rutherglen - moving to Adelaide at the end of Feb.
In the space of last year, our campervan was 'tanned', someone tried to smash their way into the house across the road while they were in their beds, boy in the office had his house burgled, had to collect my sister from Shettleston cos she was terrified by goings-on in her close.
When are you thinking of moving?
sorry to hear about your campervan!
We're hoping to have our visa by the end of this year, depending on money at that point we might be able to go shortly after getting the visa or need to stay another couple months to boost the savings but Definately 2014, earlier the better!
Hope your move goes well! Make sure you post an update when you get there, would nice to see how you settle in :)
Hi Kel - flights are booked for 4 weeks tomorrow.
Not long now.
Been in Seaford for 6 months. They do a community booklet every so often detailing the different crimes. I can't remember seeing any break ins since we've been here, biggest problem seems to be graffiti. I feel much safer here, but we have moved from Leeds/Bradford area.
Visa Granted 11/3/11
Arrived in Adelaide 3/8/12
Great how people state it's a 'fact' that there's less crime here but always fail to provide any data to back that up. All the stats I've seen suggest that Adelaide - like any other first world city of a million people - has it's fair share of crime. It's certainly no worse than other places but it's wishful thinking (in the absence of any 'facts' to the contrary) to think that crime's any lower. Reporting inconsistencies aside (partly because types of crime get defined differently from country to country and even state to state, making comparisons sometimes difficult), there's a surprising similarity between crime stats in most 'civilised' places. Pretty much the same % of people will commit crime, whether you're in Adelaide or Aberdeen.
As for there being no crime to report on, it reminds me of something I wrote in a thread last year in a similar vein:
"Got to say I notice crime not making the papers more here than I ever did in the UK, and when it does it's very low-key. I don't buy a paper here because their quality is so poor, but I do flick through them at work and the occasional one finds its way here via Adel. An Advertiser I'm looking at now has got three pages about the Adelaide Oval redevelopment, a page about the lotto, several full and half-page adverts, four half-page photos that don't have much in the way of stories attached, an article about record numbers of Aussie eateries closing their doors, a page about Lara Bingle (of course), more fluff, nearly half a page about self service tills in supermarkets, something about thin models on catwalks, then on page 23 is the first mention of local news - that a record 5,000 cars were nicked in SA last year, nearly 12,000 broken into and ten per week are getting torched.
"As last week's Sunday Mail is still around I'll take a look at that - the Crows are on the front page (of course), there are two pages about a horse winning a race (of course), half a page about Pixie the Chihuahua putting on weight (I don't know about you, but I was relieved to hear about that) along with two colour photos done in a 'before and after' kind of way to prove the point, Lots of full page ads and showbiz pieces before the first local news on page 15 - two men holding a gun to the head of a 79 year old woman, then grabbing her by the throat, pulling her to the ground and standing on her chest before robbing her. I can see why Pixie would come before that!"
I feel safe enough here although I worry when my kids are out. I expect that would be the same just about anywhere.
I wonder if I break into my own house, that will make it, statistically, less likely for a further break-in to occur?
"Don't stare at it for too long.....you'll go mad".
I have heard that there could be a basketball ring being stolen from a driveway soon though....you are being watched!!!![/QUOTE]
Nope it's still here..... Welcome anytime!!
I do work for a couple of real estate agents and I do at least one break in each week on rentals and just not one area but all over thge city.
