I thought she was an awful woman. She certainly didn't make me feel proud to be British. The only good thing she did was to talk to Gorbachov, and help bring about the end of the cold war. I'm old enough to remember Greenham Common, the Miners Strike, the poll tax.....

She was great. We're all humans and yes she made some mistakes but what politicians/humans don't. She was a strong leader and Britain would be stuck in the dark ages if it wasn't for her.

 

It's not as if the last Labour government that I bet all her haters support haven't made a few costly mistakes that we are paying for now is it ?

RIP, whatever your feelings Maggie was an iconic part of UK history.

 

Not always agreed with her but admired a leader that actually stood up for her beliefs and against opposition.

 

Sorry but look at the soppy minded fops called politicians today.

 

The Falklands conflict was one such episode.

I always laugh when people refer to her bad decisions. Like the poll tax that was rebadged the council tax and Labour kept. The nuclear protests that to get rid of the missiles that labor kept and keep us safe. The privatisation of the public services that Labor not only kept but expanded on. The miners strikes to stand up to corrupt unions. The Falklands which was a just war unlike Blairs illegal war in Iraq. Her hard line on immigration which now doesn't seem such a bad thing.

I was born and brought up in West Yorkshire - I'd not disrespect the passing of someone's Mum/Aunt/Grandma.

 

It's just the way I was brought up I suppose.

 

Never knock someone who is down. Including when they pass away.

The council tax was brought in by the conservatives after the collapse of the poll tax and Labor kept it and we still have it. In essence though its the same, one taxed a person the other just taxes the persons dwelling. Either way your taxed.

I couldn't agree more. I feel so sad tonight after hearing about Margaret Thatcher's passing. She was our greatest PM since Winston Churchill. I know she wasn't everyone's 'cup-of-tea', but she was definitely mine! I'm happy to be in Adelaide, but right now I wish I was back in England. God bless you, Maggie T. You were just what we needed to make us strong again, and boy, do we need you now!! Rest in Peace now. bhx

She was what was needed at the time and she gave everyone a good kick up the backside. All her decisions weren't great but as has already been said no one is perfect.

I thought she was ok - but have been amazed at the vitriol of some now that she has died. Some people hold grudges for a long long time I guess. I think she did some good stuff... and some bad stuff - she was PM for about 11 years after all so hardly surprising. Always remember the Spitting Image portrayal of her as a totally mad despot towards the end of her reign though - boy, that programme had some influence! Mind you, I wouldn't be sad if the news was about Tony Blair or his awful wife, so I guess I'm as bad as anyone else...

[sic]Tonight I shall go and have a drink for Margaret Thatcher's death. I shall raise my glass to the night sky, and THANK HER, and celebrate her life. People on this seem to have a very strange view of history. So here are a few little nuggets with how and more specifically WHY a lot of industries were destroyed by her, and what's more, destroyed with the MANDATE OF THE BRITISH PEOPLE. The seventies were blighted by the trade unions waiting for winter and then coming out on strike at it's heart. Holding the country to ransom for ANNUAL pay rises of up to 36% ABOVE inflation. This was the likes of Scargill and co. And they bled us dry. We were bankrupted by them. And then the Winter of Discontent happened. And they ALL came out. Miners, power workers, transport workers; even funeral directors, everything tied into the TGWU came out. My own grandparents lay on a slab for 2 months waiting to be buried. The entire country was a ruin. Rubbish not collected for months, rats everywhere. And the unions laughed, and brought down Callaghan's Labour Government. And Thatcher stood up at the General Election and made ONE SIMPLE PROMISE. Elect me. And THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. ELECT ME AND I WILL DESTROY THEM. She won a landslide. On that promise.And she became the last elected Prime Minister to actually hold true to her election promise. She did exactly what she said. She utterly destroyed the unions. Obliterated them. The cost was those industries. We knew that would be the price. But we would not allow them to hold us to ransom again. What she did, she did with our BLESSING. The socialists and people who backed those strikes have only themselves to blame for what happened. Baroness Thatcher didn't destroy those industries and communities for fun or as part of a class war. She did it to stop them holding the country to ransom again. And then she held the purse strings tight and re-built the economy and the country and Britain again stood tall and thrived. And we won back the global respect we had lost while the left wing ruled. In the Falklands we were thankful for her being in office. Those of us who went 'south' in '82 did so knowing we had a leader who would not - and did not- interfere. She sent the military and allowed us to do our job. Gave us the money, the equipment and most of all THE FREEDOM to get the job done. Our lands had been invaded. We had a gun up our nose. SHE led us. Frankly Thatcher took a very broken Britain by the hand like a strict old fashioned Matron and LED THE COUNTRY BACK TO WHERE IT HAD ONCE BEEN. We were the worlds 3rd major power in ALL respects. And as for the world, it has NEVER been safer than when Thatcher was in Downing Street, Reagan was in the White House and Gorbachev was in the Kremlin as the three spoke DAILY. They laid the ground for the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Russians were TERRIFIED of her. And the world again feared Britain. And lets not forget that she gave people the full right to buy their own council property. Her vision was that the TENNANT and the tennant alone could buy that property.As soon as her party stabbed her in the back the feeding frenzy began as under her the famous Tory grandee greed was held in check. So they stabbed her, led by the europro traitor ponce Heseltine - who didn't have the guts to face her openly and alone - they arranged her removal. And we have been a broken patsy for europe ever since. So yes, tonight I will celebrate the death of Baroness Thatcher, with thanks, with respect, and with sadness, because she allowed me to know what we could be, what we could achieve, what it meant to be BRITISH

Yes they are both taxes but they are not in essence the same thing.

 

The poll tax was brought in to replace an existing tax, council rates (as here in SA), which were a property based tax based on the rateable value of the home. A big house paid more, a small flat paid less. The current council tax in the UK is more like the old rates, but the rateable value has been replaced by bands and also now there is a discount if only one person lives in the house.

 

Poll tax is totally different in that it wasn't a property based tax but a per capita based tax, based on the number of adults in a household rather than the value of the property. This meant a millionaire was paying the same poll tax as a low income earner, so that the tax was a tiny proportion of the millionaire's income but a sizeable portion of the poor person's income. It also led to problems with rentals, student houses etc with lots of people falling through the cracks and not paying, plus people were not registering on the electoral roll to avoid paying the tax, so it was in effect discouraging people from exercising their democratic right to vote. I think it was a bit of a nightmare to administer. I'm not sure what the situation was where people owned more than one house.

 

The poll tax riots were pretty appalling, but I suppose the message got across that people weren't happy with it.

Can someone tell me why she get's a military funeral ? I honestly don't know. is it because of the falklands, or because she was lady thatcher or because she was a PM.

 

I thought she was fantastic though. It's not always what a politician does in the headlines that's important but what they do in the back ground. I can't imagine for 1 minute there would be as many stories in the UK about dole bludgers with 6 kids living in a million pound Notting hill mansions, whilst the rest of work for what ? I do think the UK would be a very much more positive place to be if she or someone like her was still in charge.
