renting in London

My daughter and friend have been doing the awfully time consuming thing of finding a flat that's half decent, clean and within their budget( haha at London rental costs ). They thought they had found one, advertised at a certain price. However other people were looking and so it was a case of bidding their offer of rent above the advertised price just as you would if you were buying. Is this now common practice or is it just in the ridiculousness that is accommodation in London? A year and a half ago she experienced the flatmate interviews, where shortlisted applicants were invited to the pub for drinks to compete against each other socially for the room….. I just kept thinking what 1200 pounds a month would get you here haha…
