I thought we would start a thread for people who are moving over this year, it may help in getting friendships established for when you arrive as well as chatting with someone who is going through the same as you.

So if you are moving this year please add your name here and good luck with everything.

I am always surprised by how many people arrive here and have not discovered this forum. I get guests who book through the various holiday sites and I always make it a point to refer them here. The information often proves invaluable and opens up a network of people and future friends who are experiencing the same as they are. I will continue to refer people here and may have another look to see where people discovered my web site and send them this link.

Hi Guys, my wife Tammy, Me (Ryan), daughter Sarah 9, son James 7 will be arriving in Adelaide right after Easter! As Tamara said, this forum has been absolutely essential to us, I couldn't imagine coming over without knowing what its like in Adelaide, In our travels we have travelled up and down the East Coast without making it Adelaide. Thanks to all who keep this vital forum going!

Hi, I'm from the U.K, though been in Christchurch (New Zealand) since 2003 and shall be spending a year in Adelaide from beginning of May time, along with wife (whom shall require a visa) and two children. We've got naught organised as far as renting goes - I got informed steer clear of the far north! Work will be through an agency, which is great to start with. Not sure what else to write...

Hi, I'm Linda and my OH is Dave, we've got two boys 11 and 13 and we plan to move out as soon as our house completes - hopefully by the end of this month (March)!! The boys are still coming round to the idea but once they are settled I'm sure they will be fine. I'm a teacher and have accepted a job offer with an early learning centre in Blackwood, to start once we arrive and settle in (they are being very understanding) and hubbie is a driving instructor who will retrain over in SA and start work asap. Anyone want to chat/ask questions please get in touch, it would be lovely to hear from you and can't wait to meet up once we get over.

To the ones of you coming over with children please try not to worry too much. When we first told our 3 we were moving the two youngest were fine but the eldest started crying and saying he didn't want to leave England. We have been here 11/12 years now I can never remember lol and we have never been back to the UK, the eldest had a chance of going back with his friends who wanted to see Europe but he had no interest at all and says he would never return. It is hard at first and the most important thing is to get them socialising as soon as you can whether it be sports groups, or inviting school friends around.

Hi everyone,

Myself, Carrie (31) & OH, Joe (28) and our little Jack Russell Sydney will be moving to Adelaide in October :-) we can't wait now....literally counting down the days....

Would be be great to make some friends on here in anticipation of our move and any tips/advice others could offer. So where is everyone looking to settle? We will be staying around the West Beach area at first with a friend from the UK who emigrated last year..

Happy chatting. X

West beach will be a great base. Where you settle really depends on where you find work. In rush hour you are looking at over an hour from top to bottom of Adelaide, far more of you like it deep South. Mind you, depending on your job, you could just look around where you choose to live if you find somewhere you fall in love with.

We are the McKnight family from Glasgow. Me (Lorraine) hubby and 2 boys aged 19 and 16. I work in community mental health and addictions support, hubby is a construction manager now but joiner to trade. My 19 year old is a lens technician in an opticians. We arrive 2/4/15 and will initially be based in the Seaford Rise area. Tbh I'm completely bricking it! The thought of no work scares the living daylights out if me. I don't think its gonna be real until I'm on the plane!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip on rush hour Blossom. I've already been offered an agency job on arrival, the office in based the south side of Adelaide CBD but I will be working all over. I get my mileage paid so I'm not so bothered about the commute, just want to be not too far from the beach and not in the CBD. :-)

Btw, thought it might be great to share a list of deductibles and offsets with fellow members here who are on visa 457 (if any)

https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/Deductions-you-can-claim/Vehicle-and-travel-expenses/Award-transport-payments/

This link isn't actually the correct one, and the offsets apply to everyone no matter what visa they are on. Assuming you have work rights.
