Is anyone considering leaving SA?

Reading the thread 'Skilled Migration Should be put on hold' by Diane, couldn't help but notice there were plenty of negative comments on SA's economy and work in general. Anybody out there planning to bail out of SA and head interstate or back to UK due to this? Enquiring minds need to know (ok I'm nosey).

I would personally say that SA has been ok, but it's never struck me as a long term place. It's a little bit too insular and incestuous for my taste.

I just don't think I'd have the energy to move interstate and effectively do it all again - meet new people, research areas, schools, figure out what was what. If we did decide SA wasn't for us I think we'd go back to the UK, but no plans for that at the moment. Been here nearly a year now and so far, so good. Some things I prefer about Adelaide, some things I prefer about the UK.

I'm just about to start looking for part time work so will be interesting to see how long it takes!!

We are in the process of applying for out 189 Visas and are undecided between Perth and Adelaide - attainability of work being the major factor. I'd be interested to see peoples comments on this thread :) xx

I think both could be along similar lines. Some people are positive about Perth, others not. What do people say over on our sister site about the current situation in Perth? Poms in Oz and Perth Poms are the sites.

We have been here for 8 years.

We certainly wouldn't move back to where we came from or back to the UK!

I am very happy in SA. A move interstate would just be too much. There are other family members to think about who have put down roots here. The only reason that I mention a move is that (for objectivity) my OH would move to Perth if I would agree. Investment wise, Adelaide has been a disaster and it was a financial mistake not to have moved to another state...the power of hindsight and economic factors I guess.

I have been to Tassie and like Hobart. I am presently on another trip to Melbourne, like it but could never live here. Same story with Sydney.

I like the people in Adelaide. I have found Australians to be great(in general) but more so in Adelaide. No immediate plans to move and any move anywhere may be dictated by health reasons and not any other factors.

I love Adelaide for all it's faults but really I'm only here because my OH's family is here. I can't see us moving anywhere else while my Mother in Law is still around and I'm not a big city person so have no desire to be in Melbourne or Sydney. Maybe one day we might decide to move somewhere else but I wouldn't know where. I can certainly understand why others wouldn't like Adelaide and would want to move elsewhere though.

My situation is pretty much the same as NicF (apart from the MIL).

Hubby and I are both happy and I've settled well here and he is happy being back here. Not only for family and friends but for all the other benefits it has given us.

We are the sort of people who moved around quite a bit and don't really tend to look back to where we've left and instead focus and like to move forward, to somewhere new each time. Coming back here was fine for hubby as he'd been gone a long time but honestly, we'd have just as happily gone elsewhere in the world as we like pastures new. Havng said that, Adelaide is probably going to be home for a while yet but we have no interest to live in the UK anymore and would go somewhere else in the world should we ever decide to leave.

In today's Advertiser, page 2, right hand sight on the top, was a little article about a statement from a politician stating migration should be put on hold! I've forgotten the name but he used to be Immigration Minister around 2003 or so.

The reasons why he would put it on hold a) too much unemployed people b) worse economy than other states. Nothing new for us who live here but interesting to find it in the daily papers on page 2 as it seems to unsettle some people 'in charge'. The article also stated that many on family visas struggle to find work due to either lack of qualification or tough employment situation here in SA.

Perth is pretty in places, but the city is unbelievably boring; it shuts down at 6 and there's very little life. Perth is also far more remote from the rest of Oz and is expensive for property etc.

We were originally going to move to Perth but the price of property was a major factor in our decision to move to Adelaide. It is still horribly expensive and I couldn't afford a decent house there.

I was there 2 months ago and the development and new housing that is going on is amazing though.

I think it would depend on what jobs you do, what lifestyle you wish to lead, what are your motivators for migrating etc.

I have 3 friends and between them 4 of their sons have all relocated to Perth/WA due to the downturn of work in Adelaide. All 4 of the lads are in their late 20's, single and available to work plenty of hours (which they do), their jobs are painter, diesel mechanic, electrician and emergency services worker. They are earning decent money, but then the cost of living seems to be much higher. A friend in Adelaide recently had relatives staying with them from Perth and she took them round Central Market and they reckoned the prices in Adelaide were half the prices in Perth.

If you look on the pomsinoz forum there are plenty of stories of people who dislike living in Perth and people that are struggling for work, but then there are also people that wouldn't like to live in Adelaide, so it is horses for courses! Again, it comes down to the job you do, your attitude and approach, motivators and the life you wish to lead.

I love Perth as much as I love to live in Adelaide. Perth is like a 'sister' of Adelaide, both similar but Perth seems to be more advanced in terms of modernity, high rise buildings, many good quality high ways/roads etc. The reason why I wouldn't move to Perth is mentioned before: skyrocketing prices everywhere!!! Grocery bills 10 % higher than in every other state, houses either crap below 500,000 bucks (due to the fact that no stamp duty will be paid in WA under the purchase price of 500,000!!!) or far too expensive for what you get. In Adelaide we get more for less, even the higher salary in WA can't outweigh that fact.

Interesting, not too many replies on this thread so far. Wonder if that's because people are far too busy having a fabulous life in SA to post, or is it because they've left already.

Noticed a few people have mentioned how expensive Perth is as an alternative. Its a comment I've heard more than once when Perth comes up in conversation with expats in Adelaide. Mostly I would describe them as Pro-Adelaide ex-pats, or at least their dug in so deep they have no option but to stay. On the other hand a couple we know are looking at moving there from Adelaide after 20 years here. Their report back was the cost of living is pretty much the same. We're off there in June ourselves, really looking forward to it, makes you wonder who's fibbing? I'll post a thread when we know.

Hi my family and I have been here since Jan 2012,,,,my wife & i got jobs quite easily, my son has struggled to find employment but has had a few interviews, Perth is larger than Adelaide and there is more Brits there, but it is a lot more expensive to buy property, the mining boom has subsided & large Company's such as Woodside are letting a lot of people go. So good Luck.

Hi Carl, thanks for the good luck wish. Although my post does sound like we're moving there, it is in fact just a recce visit. We're certainly under no illusions, since being here we've hammered Aussie hard. If we haven't been there we know someone who has, if they make the mistake of mentioning a place we haven't been, we interrogate them 'gestapo' style. Perth is simply the last point on the map we need to stick a pin. Have we ever found a place better to live than Adelaide as working people, simple answer 'no'. If money was no object 'yes'.

Big shock yesterday OH's boss is heading back to UK after 10 years here, she didn't see that coming.

We're out, I left three weeks ago after being out of work since october last year, sold house and picked up a job in less than 6 working days in London, doubled what was on in adelaide also. Now i can afford to send my kids to private school here in the Uk , but not in adelaide, I think the place is dying to be honest

Freelance management consultant - specialising process improvement in aviation, finance and justice/law , to be honest I have over 2 decades of experience across london, hong kong and sydney, adelaide just did not pay nor did it excite me, the nepotism and mates club gives rise to mediocre performance and a lack of risk taking so nothing gets done, the public sector has the place ruined and that will take years to fix, I think a decade or more.

They should be performance managed.
