Welcome to our new look, fortnightly Tourism News. It is an exciting time in the tourism industry in South Australia and we have lots of news and opportunities that we will now be bringing to you on a fortnightly basis. The SATC is committed to growing the visitor economy and in this edition you can read about the recent announcements from China Southern Airlines and Cathay Pacific, our new global campaign as well as our upcoming China workshops. South Australia unveils new global campaign
SATC’s new global advertising campaign has been launched positioning Adelaide and South Australia’s regions as an attractive destination for international, interstate and intrastate visitors. Events South Australia video
Expenditure delivered by leisure events in South Australia has grown by $66 million to reach $337 million. That is a significant 24 per cent growth in the last year. Events create vibrancy and are a great way to raise the profile of South Australia around the world. Events also prompt consumers to visit South Australia and its regions by giving them a reason to visit, right now. New international flights for Adelaide from China
Starting December 2016, China Southern Airlines will fly direct between Guangzhou and Adelaide three times a week. This service will create more than 135 local jobs and have flow-on benefits for our hotels, restaurants and tourism operators across South Australia. Cathay Pacific to increase flights to Adelaide
Cathay Pacific will increase their direct flights between Adelaide and Hong Kong in December, adding a fifth weekly flight that will further capacity by 25 per cent. China is a growing market for South Australia and this welcomed news will give Chinese visitors easy, direct access to our state.
August Tourism Champion
This month our Tourism Champion is Sea Dragon Lodge. Located on Kangaroo Island, owner Steve Lane has grown his eco-resort from a $40,000 to $400,000 business, attracting more visitors from overseas, particularly Asia. Understanding China Workshops
China is currently South Australia’s number one tourism market by expenditure and number four by visitor volume. With the introduction of China Southern in December, the China opportunity is stronger than ever. In response to the need to be ready for the increase in Chinese visitors, the South Australian Tourism Commission will be running a series of ‘Understanding China’ workshops to help local tourism operators and businesses better understand the Chinese traveller. Developed following a review of the current market by leading tourism expert, Richard Beere, Director of Fastrak Asian Solutions, the workshops aim to provide insight on how to grow and enhance Chinese visitor experiences as well as assist you in better understanding the realities and requirements of this market. Applications open for local Best of Wine Tourism Awards
Award applications are now open for the Best Wine Tourism Awards. Part of South Australia’s membership in the Great Wine Capitals Global Network, these local awards will see winners with an opportunity to be nominated in the International Best of Wine Tourism Awards. Nominations close on Tuesday August 26, with the winners announced on Friday September 15. For more information click here.
Registrations open for 2017 Small Islands of the World International Conference
Paper/Poster submissions and registrations are now open for the 2017 15th Islands of the World International Conference – Small Islands Communities: Models for Global Survival. The conference will take place from 2-8 July 2017 on Kangaroo Island. If you wish to present a paper or poster at the Conference, please submit an abstract to the Conference organisers by Friday 2 December 2016. For more information, click here. Congratulations to The Barossa’s fermentAsian on their win of Australia’s Wine List of the Year at the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Wine awards. The restaurant also won Best Country Restaurant. Apothecary 1878 was the other South Australian business to take home a win, winning Best Aperitif List. The winners were handpicked by an expert team of judges. For more information click here.
Tourism Australia and Qantas to boost visitor numbers with new multi-million dollar deal
A three year agreement has been signed between Qantas and Tourism Australia to promote Australia to the world. The $20 million deal involves joint investment to attract more international visitors to Australia with a focus on the United States, Asia, the United Kingdom and Europe. With an emphasis on digital marketing, joint campaigns will be supported through public relations, social media and trade activities. For more information click here.
Don’t miss the Australian Event Symposium
The Australian Event Symposium will be held on the Sunshine Coast on 22 and 23 September 2016. The two-day conference for the national events industry will feature eight keynote presentations from creative directors of some of Australia’s most significant events, including Vivid Sydney, the Australian Open and Woodford Folk Festival, as well as 18 skills-based sessions exploring topics such as social media, sponsorship, crowd safety, volunteer management and event security. There is an early bird rate for full Symposium registrations until 23 August. A full registration also includes three networking events: the Australian Event Awards, an evening of cocktails on the beach and “Breakfast at the Bar” a unique venue showcase by Visit Sunshine Coast. 2016 Adelaide Fashion Festival program released
Tickets are now on sale for the 2016 Adelaide Fashion Festival that will be held from 19 to 23 October. Building on the success of last year’s event, there will be 10 runways and 20 events across five days featuring an abundance of talented South Australian designers. The new festival hub of Victoria Square will provide a larger runway and the development of a runway precinct with bar, food and market stalls. For more information and to buy tickets, click here. 2016-17 Regional Events and Festivals Program
Thirty-two South Australian events and festivals will share in grants totalling more than $390,000 through Events South Australia’s 2016-17 Regional Events and Festivals Program. The program provides financial support toward marketing and promotional activities for events and festivals, which boost the visitor economy and strengthen the profile of our regions. Australian Diamonds play at Adelaide Entertainment Centre
The 2016 Netball Quad Series will make its way to Adelaide on Wednesday August 31 when the Australian Diamonds take on the England Roses as part of the four nation netball series between Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa. The game will take place at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and tickets are still available from Ticketek here. The last time the Diamonds played in Adelaide was three years ago.
International cricket double-header to be held in Adelaide
Adelaide Oval will play host to two additional international cricket matches next cricket season with the KFC T20 Australia versus Sri Lanka and Women’s T20 Southern Stars versus New Zealand matches taking place. More than 40,000 people are expected to attend the two matches on February 22 2017, which will also attract a huge international viewing audience. It has also been confirmed that the Australia Day international fixture and the Adelaide Striker’s New Year’s Eve Big Bash T20 games have been locked in for the next five years.
