Hi everyone

Just a quick progress report

We are begining to really settle into aussie life now. We are renting in Glenelg and are really enjoying being close to the beach and not to far from the City. Everyday I just can't believe we are here as we are from the Midlands and only saw the beach when we went on holiday now I see it everyday. Glenelg is a nice spot to start especially if you don't have a car as public transport is good and everything you could possibly need is on your doorstep although it would to expensive for us to stay here long term (better buy the lotto tickets ha ha).

I have started work at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and I was really pleased as I only have 4 patients to look after and I am used 14 or sometimes 27. Everyone at work has been so friendly and supportive, however I was shocked at some of the equipment and practices which are years out of date but on the whole my work life is much less stressful and I think I will be very happy at the RAH. Liz has had some work with select education but she would love to find a more permanent posistion.

Our social life has been really good since we arrived due in large to this site. We have made some really good friends and had some good times. We hope to meet lots more people in the future weeks.

I have to admit I am not homesick yet but I am sure it will come especially in August when the footie season starts ha ha. Liz is finding it difficult but I think this is in part due to her not working full time yet. I am sure we will continue to enjoy our time here and hope we can be of assistance to anyone going through the process.

Dear Kris

I am new to this! Are there nurse specialists in the RAH. I was working as one in East Anglia and came out to Adelaide with my husband. Been in OZ 7 months but Adelaide 3 weeks. Will be looking for work soon when kids settled.

My research makes me think that nurse specialists don't really exist here. What about extended practice etc.

any info would be great.

Love Glenelg we stayed in the Plaza pier when we first got here.

Hi, glad you are settling and are happy, what nursing do you do? I had to laugh when I had my telephone interview when they apologised that sometimes I would end up with 4 patients! :biglaugh: When I commented on 4 patients they asked if that was too much to which I laughed and replied no far from it I am used to 12 or more!! This they were shocked at!! I am a childrens nurse and have a job at the women and childrens hospital, just got to get there now!!!!!

Keep the updates coming

Not working at the moment waiting till the kids are settled in school etc. Can only work part-time on my spouse visa at the moment. Want to do a similar nurse specialist job if possible ie Breast care. Would be happy to set up a service in Adelaide if the opportunity arose. Had a few "chats" on the telephone with nurse managers when i thought i would be working in Brisbane. Very informal.:)

Hi kris,

Great that you have both settled so quickly, we are only in early stages but a few people have suggested Glenelg as being a great place to live especially as we are a "youngish couple" with no children. We would like to be near to everything but still want chilled out lifestyle. Is it still a fairly quiet area? Heard it's expensive just wondering what the rental market was like in the area and cost of things in general? Any info appreciated.

Thanks Jo:notworthy:

We are based in pier street and have found Glenelg has everything we need. Our units are a nice and quiet. Glenelg is more expensive than other suburbs but we don't have children either yet so can just about afford it. We probably won't stay here long term but need to get the living near the beach thing out of our system ha ha.

Hi Liz and Kris,

Where in the Midlands are you from? I am from Nottingham and Matt is from Retford. We moved to North Brighton for the same reasons you moved to Glenelg. Coming from a land locked county in the UK, we are still loving the novelty of having the beach a 10 minute walk away, roll on summer!!

Hi Kris

So glad to hear you've settled well. Must be great knowing all your hard work has paid of and your finally there. Do they just do short shifts at RAH? I'm used to the 14 or 11 hour shifts and will find it quite strange doing an 8 hr shift all the time.

Take care and keep enjoying that new life.

Hi. I just wondered if you really meant that you can only work part-time on your spouse visa. Is this a rule? I need to know as I'm going out on a spouse visa at the end of August and will be looking for full time work. Thank you.

Hi Cazzie

I am out here on a 442 visa which means a spouse can work up to 22hrs only but different visa sub classes allow different things. I would look on the web and check out what you are allowed on your visa subclass. Because of the type of job my husband is doing he is on this visa for a year then he gets permenant residency but till then i can only work part-time. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely look it up. Even so, I am amazed that you can only work for a limited amount of hours regardless of visa. Mind you, 22 hours a week sounds very balanced - maybe I'll aim for that myself and beach the rest! Take care, Cazzie

Hi Jo, we find glenelg quiet in the street where we live, we have heard that in the summer there is always something on here. If you live near jetty road a 2 bed unit starts around 260+ if you live a bit further out like glenelg east or off anzac highway we viewed 2 bed units from around 240+. We have found there are always rentals avaliable here you just need to be quick if you really like one!

Thanks Liz

Hi Liz and Kris,

New to PIA ( yesterday ).

Hoping to be in or around Glenelg Christmas or before ( fingers cossed ).

Like you probably be renting if our house doesn't sell here.

School is important for us but there are some good ones around by the looks of things.

How did the rental situation work for you?

Did you commit before you went over, or stay somewhere while you looked around.?

How easy is it to rent without credit references, or will the fact that my OH (David ) has a job be of any help.

OH has suddenly taken an interest in the site when lads night out is mentioned by the way!

Hi Sam

We were in the residential wing at the royal adelaide hospital to begin with as they provided free accomadation with my job. We brought loads of morgage statements and proof of payment of bills etc over with us but the rental agent never asked to see them. If your husband has a job you will find a rental no worries.
