Nearly six months in

Well, nearly been since months since we arrived and the time has gone so quick. Still feels like we are on holiday!

We have settled in to life in Oz even better than we had hoped. We are happy with the house and the north of Adelaide where we are. We are already looking at areas near by to hopefully move to next year just to get a bit bigger house and more land and of course the swimming pool!

Harry and Georgia have settled in to school really well and have made loads of friends both at school and where we live. Most weekends we have either some of their friends over for a sleep over or if we are really lucky they are out at friends!

There are not many Poms up this way so most of the people we have met have been ozzies which has been great as they are really friendly and helpful. So much better having a chat with the man or lady at the checkouts than some miserable uk checkout person who obviously hates the job so much it would be best if they did not bother!

I found a good job as a site manager very quick after arriving with the help of a good friend via an agency and within the first week had two good job offers but in the end I went for a firm called Hansen Yuncken, which is one of the biggest in oz. So far have settled in really well working with some great people on a job in the city on a new office block. While the same problems working in building happen here as the uk the whole working day is so much better and even with deadlines more relaxed. Will take me ages to get used to stopping work on one of the fridays for a site BBQ! Now this job is coming to an end all the direct employees were taken out to a great Greek restaraunt this week for a great meal and all the drink as well as getting a hamper for all our efforts (never had anything like that in the uk, nice to be appreciated!) While the hours have been longer than what i had in Uk due to the deadlines, especially the last few weeks working sometimes 7 day weeks, i much prefer things here, especially as i get paid for working overtime where in uk i did not!! If you come here just be realistic as if you want the lifestyle be prepared to work the hours and travel the distances as the ozzies do work long hours! After christmas have got to start a new job on a refurbishment at Adelaide University again in the city. So despite at the moment not having loads of free time and the way of life i must say i prefer it. Saying that, the time you do get off the weather is usually hot or dry so you can always do something or go somewhere.

Rachel has settled well and has made some great friends through school and also near our house. Rachel has also got herself some part time cleaning works both through an agency and private which has been great to get out and about.

Life here in oz has been good so far, the standard of living here is alot better than we had in the uk, the houses are bigger and the cost of living generally is a little cheaper here although having been lucky with a good job helps where earning as much if not more than the uk.

Ozzie people are great although the driving habits sometimes leave a lot to be desired as i think here when you get your "P" plates after you have passed your test i think the first thing they do is take your brains out and clamp your foot to the accelerator! Although some of the older drivers are just as bad!

Have managed to meet up with a few friends off Poms In Adelaide, some that we knew before coming here and some great new friends since we have been here. There are still a few people we knew before coming and some we are yet to meet up with here that we hope will happen soon. So sorry if we have not got round to meeting up with you yet! Not had many get togethers due to being so busy but had a great BBQ with the fellow moderators off PIA, was great to finally meet them all and was a great day, hopefully there will be many more. Had a couple of other get togethers but struggled to get to chat to everyone we wanted to who we knew before arriving. Where most people head south the get togethers with the good friends are few and far between due to time etc but we know they are always on hand for a chat or get together so when time permits i know we will get together more. Also had some great golf days out both with friends here in the north and south and have been great having a laugh at each others expense! Golf courses here are great and the sight of seeing parrots and kangaroos while your playing is mind blowing!

So far we have had days upto 38deg which have been good although we are assured just how hot it will get so will have to get used to that but waking up to blue sunny skies most days makes you feel better and is one of the reasons we all come here. Now when we see rain it is with relief instead of "not again!"

Have had some days to the beach and the miles of sandy beaches is great and the sight of dolphins jumping and swimming along in front of you is amazing and like a dream.

So much we could write about as have done and achieved so much in what has been a short space of time but overall the only regret we have is

SHOULD HAVE DONE IT YEARS AGO!

Its good to hear that you are enjoying your new life in Oz. Its a small world with you coming over from Hastings, we moved over in February from Bexhill. We too have settled in well and are enjoying our new life. Only downside is there is not enough hours in a day or week to do everything we want too, Too much time spent socialising and enjoying ourselves with our new friends. LOL.:jiggy:

:notworthy::notworthy:Great post Ian, just think it was about 18 months ago when we met in the uk not knowing what was ahead of us, what were we both worried about ?.......nothing ...nothing at all. Its a huge jump but so far worth every second.
