Clairvoyants and Religion WHY ?????

Just starting a debate on Clairvoyants and religion after some asked about Clairvoyants on another thread and took a little bit of grief and fun being made of them for believing in such things.

To me Clairvoyants are just a con like all religions but Clairvoyants are more up front about it. I remember watching a doco years ago about this and how they ask certain questions to judge a persons response to give them clues to that person also how they read facial expressions for reactions to those questions.

I tried this and went to a very highly respected Clairvoyant as an experiment about 5 years ago dressed as a facial burns person so my face was completely covered, kept my hands in my pockets and gave them a load a really wrong answers and then got fed the biggest load of crap possible about my life, what was in the future for me.

When they finished I took off the mask and told them what a load of rubbish and was escorted off the premises.

There maybe some Clairvoyants that can predict the future for people and there are people that are really strong believers in this sort of thing but is there belief in this clouding there judgment to what they really want to hear before what really is ?.

Next Religion. Why do people feel the need to believe in something like religion?

Religion has been the cause directly and indirectly of most wars. What is the point of it if it causes so much grief and hassle?

I’ve always been a person who seeks legitimate answers to questions so why is it people and history can prove the existence and demise of dinosaurs, people and history can prove Egyptian pharaoh’s were who they really were so why cant history, people, science or anything else prove that there are gods, profits, heaven and hell, Jesus, Mohamed, Jehovah and anyone or anything one else the bible, Koran or scriptures claims to exist or existed.

Why do people feel the need to believe in such things and do such radical and terrible things to others in the name of it, is it because it was forced on them as kids when they were going up or later in life, was it there own choice to believe in such stuff.

These questions are to pick on any one religion just to find out why they believe in religion and have they seen or been shown any proof that is really exist.

Thanks for this post Matt.

An intelligent and well thought out thread for discussion.

Just how it should be done and where.

I have no real opinions on Clairvoyants, never visited one or felt the need to.

I am wary of another person taking complete control of my life by future forecasts.

Not knowing makes life exciting to me!

I am not a religious person either.

Just not against it as from the community side religions can give great support in the community to the lonely and less fortunate.

Best service I've been to........

A Jehova's Witness funeral of a respected local man - so honest ,happy and informal.

I would always avoid Catholic services as I always feel that I am presumed guilty and should repent.

I sincerely hope this thread does not turn into a childish slanging match

I think sometimes people feel incomplete with what they have in their lives and seek answers and other things, which is fine if it works for them, personally the only thing i believe in is myself, i am a good honest person who loves life and feels complete and happy with my lot i would not live my life by some old story book or by what some old dear that takes my money says, i live how i want, most of my friends are christians as is my OH yes we have have healthy discussions about it all but they don't push it on me and i don't push my veiws on them, i let my kids hear both sides of the story so they can also make up their own minds, whatever you believe in be happy but keep it to yourselves and NEVER give up your money to have someone tell you your 'future' make your own future you can control your life, happiness is a choice!! my opinion...thats all!!:cute::cute:

using my special powers along with years of training I have completed a reading of your personality, just for you

You have a great need for other people to like and admire you. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them. Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure inside. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. You pride yourself as an independent thinker and do not accept others' statements without satisfactory proof. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others. At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, reserved. Some of your aspirations tend to be pretty unrealistic. Security is one of your major goals in life.

Be interesting to read peoples replies to this one. I personally dont believe in clairvoyants, never been to one and wouldn't want to. My sister, mom and MIL have all been to various ones. My MIL has had messages from those who have passed over but I dont beleive in it.

If someone wants to believe in something and it makes them feel better about life and they dont hurt me or my family then I think let them believe.

This is my view

Hi Cornish

This is a particular interest of mine, for a number of reasons. However, I would like to clarify the sentence above as I am not sure what you are questioning. Are you questioning the existence of Jesus, Mohamed, prophets (spelling!) and other significant people? Or are you questioning the existence of heaven/ hell, gods and Jehovah? Or all of it?

When I lived in South Australia,my next door neighbour was a clairvoyant.I was very sceptical but let her give me a reading anyway (she did'nt charge me).I hardly knew this lady but she told me I had a son but he did'nt stay with us because I had him adopted(true)and she also told me my OH had had a major op on his knee in his early twenties.(also true)How she knew this was beyond belief because I had kept the adoption private and my OH did'nt walk with any visible limps or whatever.Religeon?I am a practising buddhists, but do not believe in mainstream religeons.I recall numerous times when I lived in SA various religeous groups would go cold calling.None of them could answer my questions about why for example dinosuars were not mentioned in the bible?I do believe in evolution, but I guess for some people, religeon gives them comfort and guidance.Nothing wrong with that either,as long as they respect my views.Ok a quick story.I had a wide circle of friends when I lived in SA and we used to discuss all kinds of weird and wonderful things. We all made a pact that whoever died first(abit morbid I know!)if there was an after life, that person then had to somehow contact us.I've lived in the UK for the past 10 years. So about 8 years ago,I woke up,and started crying my eyes out.My OH woke up and obviously asked me what was wrong.I said "Kate has died"My OH knew Kate and told me not to be so silly.I was convinced she had died.So my OH asked me to ring my other best friend in Aus.First I tried to ring Kate.No answer.I then checked my emails. There was an email from my other friend(the one the OH asked me to ring)It just read "Please ring me asap, urgent"So I nervously dialled her number. She answered the phone, and said she had some bad news.I replied "I know,Kate has died has'nt she"?My friend replied that yes she had infact died a few hours ago.I felt very strange that day.I believe Kate had somehow tried to wake me in my sleep to tell me?I also, apart from being distraught, felt quite at peace, very strange feeling.A couple of years later I was working in Penrith.I used to drive up and down the M6 to work and back from near Carlisle. So one day I get into my car and I'm about 1/2 a mile from the M6.All of a sudden I feel someone's hand on my shoulder as if someone is in the back seat?I at first was very frightened, thinking someone was about to hijack my car or whatever.I could'nt pull over due to where I was.So I kept driving and all of a sudden I felt completely ok,and said out loud "Ok Kate I know its you,how are you doing up there?(yes abit silly I know)Anyway I was coming off the M6 onto the slip road and put my foot on the brake? No brakes? At all!!!!!!!!! I nearly **** myself, but luckily the slip road was uphill and I eventually just slowed down and managed to stop.I still believe to this day Kate knew my brakes were about to fail, and the hand on my shoulder was her trying to warn/stop me from driving. So is there life after death?Going from my experiences,I think there could be!

Dinosaurs aren't mentioned in the Bible because the Old Testament was written between 4000 and 3500 years ago and the New Testament is 2000 years old. The Bible was declared a closed canon in 325CE/ AD and therefore it can't be added to. You know as well as I do that science, as we know it, did not exist in any meaningful away until thousands of years later and the recognition of the remains of dinosaurs came much later still. The dating ofsome remains still causes debate.

The Bible should not be thought of as a factual document although there are some people who do. In Genesis, it does provide an attempt to account for how the world came into being in a time before science existed. If you look and read the Genesis account of creation, remove the God element and read what was created and the order in which it appeared then it isn't doing too bad at explaining the theory of evolution and the big bang.

I hope this helps answer your question. Tell me what you think

Next Religion. Why do people feel the need to believe in something like religion?

I don't go to church at all - but believe in God,Jesus etc..I believe that when we die we either go upstairs or downstairs depending on the life we have lead.

Always believed that - it gives me comfort knowing that one day I'll meet up again with my loved ones.

We're all different. :biglaugh:

Wow! Your post sent shivers down my spine! I definitely believe in life after death but don't want to comment on my personal experiences here.

I am also religious although I don't attend church on a regular basis. I have been to Paradise Community Church (great name!) a few times in 18 months and really felt uplifted by attending.

I was not brought up to believe in God but I just do. My aunt bought me a bible when I was nine and I loved dipping into it and always have once close to hand. I find it absolutely fascinating and it's all very complex. The fact that the bible was written over hundreds of years, was written to prophesise the birth and death of Jesus and to tell the world that God gave his only son to die for us is humbling to me. The bible has stood the test of time and makes for inspirational reading. I feel that this is amazing in itself - why hasn't the bible just faded away if so many people think it is a load of old cobblers, especially in this modern age?

Bill is not religious at all and this leads to interesting discussions at times! I don't envy anyone who has no belief in God but hardly anyone I know does. Each to their own and a subject worthy of debate.

Are you questioning the existence of Jesus, Mohamed, prophets (spelling!) and other significant people? Or are you questioning the existence of heaven/ hell, gods and Jehovah? Or all of it?

Gday Libby.

yeah im questioning all of it.

There was a doco on Uk tv about 3 years ago when the church was claiming they had some sort of cloth that was suppose to be the rag that a so called jesus had been burried in but when it was carbon dated which is a factual science, the cloth was found to be bout 500 years out of date.

To me i think religion came round like the script in the "life of brian" .

How could anyone beleive in something that has no proof of ever existing or existed plus why would anyone believe in and support something that has been in its history so brutal, blood thirsty, caused the death and murder of hundreds of thousand of people in its name and still today most wars that are go on are in the name of religion.

Something that has alway confused me and im buggered if i have been ever able to get a straight answer to this but (Q) if this person jesus was supposedly born in the middle east and the bible is supposed to be true and factfull written scripture bout this persons life then why is it written with europeon names used or is the bible saying that most UK names are actually middle eastern or possibly the church has had the bible re written to use european name and if that is the case what else has been changed and can it really in that case be trusted also if that is the case and a factual scripture has been changed; why would anyone follow or belive in it.

Im knocking anyone who is religious, each to there own and beleive in what ever you like but i would be more inclined to beleive Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and mice created the world; kinda seem more realistic and factual than what ever the bibles or any scripture could ever come up with.

Hi Cornish, thanks for clarifying. And now a long post so apologies

Firstly Jesus, as a man, did exist. We know that for sure and we get that information from a number of sources...the Romans, who kept a census and recorded his life as an adult, they also kept a record of the fact they killed him and why. We know he existed from the first people who thought he was a prophet and kept records. And we also know from people who thought he was a nice enough bloke but not a prophet and certainly not the Messiah, chosen one of God.

Jesus was born in not so much the Middle East as a Jewish country where people have Hebrew names. He was Jewish and his name was Yesus ben Yusef (Jesus son of Joseph). Many of the first followers of Jesus wanted to redefine themselves and sort of rejected their Jewish roots and so looked to the other major language in the area, Greek. The New Testament is written in Greek and so when it is translated into English, there are some words that have no English equivalent so the meaning is a bit lost. An example of this is the word 'love' - in English we use the same word but the context gives the word its meaning so when I say I love my children and I love chocolate, the context is different and therefore the way 'love' is understood is different. In Greek, there are 4 words - agape (selfless love i.e. between a mother and child); philos (an idea or friend as in philosophy-love of wisdom); storge (love for an object like the previously mentioned chocolate!) and eros, the erotic love. An example of names changing is Miriam, which is how Mary would have been but the Mary was a more Greek sounding name. The early followers of Jesus were more interested in creating an identity for themselves.

Historical documents, recognised as sources by all manner of people, record the fact that these people did exist. Where they do differ is what kind of people they were. Jesus as son of God is another matter altogether but as a man he lived from the years -4BC/BCE to 29CE/ AD (the dating was slightly wrong).

The cloth you're talking about is the Turin Shroud. I think it is questionable in terms of being authentic in my opinion as the appearance of the man on it is common place. He had no special appearance and people since Jesus died have been re-enacting the crucifixion as a show of faith so it means nothing to say he died as a result of crucifixion and therefore it is Jesus. My opinion so feel free to disregard...

As for the Bible, the Bible wasn't written in English. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and ancient Hebrew at that. The New Testament was written in Ancient Greek. Think about how much the English language has changed. Words that were used commonly 300, 400, 800 years ago in English simply don't exist anymore or have lost their meaning. I think it is amazing that a 4000 year old book is still in circulation today.

Now, a question? Why do you assume that the Bible is factual? Why can it not be a book of faith, a book of poetry if you will, in which people who feel they have felt God in their lives write what they feel God wants them to? The difference comes down to whether or not you think of the Bible as the actual word of God i.e. it was dictated word for word by God or whether it was inspired by God i.e. people felt that God wanted them to write something so they did.

You're right, most wars today and in the past have been fought in the name of religion. And nearly every religion regrets that. That's a post for another time

As for the belief in something more. Every civilisation that ever existed has had a belief in something more than itself whether it be a spirituality in nature or a belief in one God or many gods. I can't say what it is that made them believe that way but some of the most amazing things have come about as a result. The Sistine Chapel is a stunning piece of art, and faith is the reason for it. Michelangelo's David is King David, the author of almost all the Psalms and the one who killed Goliath.

Like Nick and moonraker, I draw comfort from my belief that I will be with my loved ones one day. I believe that my late father keeps watch over my children. Why? Because he loved them and it makes me happy to think that. You can say I am completely nuts, and you could well be right. But with respect, I'm not hurting you with that opinion and so I would expect you to respect that and not say anything about it should we meet.

As for life after death experiences and heaven and hell, well I think there was to be some sort of ultimate judge which is where I think the concept came from. Some things are just too massive for human beings to agree upon and so we look for someone with more power or more authority, God. Think Hitler - roasting on a pitchfork for all eternity; chained to a rock so a giant buzzard could peck at his liver all day and he healed each night so it could begin again; condemned to live an eternal life in blistering heat, surrounded by desert, with little water, no food or plants of anything meaningful; all are examples of hell, a place of suffering. Personally I'm in favour of him being on the receiving end of all three. He escaped justice- why should he?

To moonraker, you mentioned that you live your life as a buddhist but said you don't believe in mainstream religion. However, Buddhism is one of the 6 main world religions and therefore is a mainstream religion.

I remember watching an interview with Spike Milligan years ago and he said that Religion is the biggest form of child abuse around. ..................totally agree with him.

Dont believe in religion at all. Just seems to be brainwashing to me, but each to thier own........

Id like to know though why , for instance, in the twin towers disaster people ran out and said it was gods will that they got out. Well surely if you believe in that stuff, wasnt it gods will that it happened in the first place??????

I am a bit of a realist though and need to have something proven to me to be able to believe . This is why im still open minded about spirits and things. ................had an interesting experience with a ouiji board (sp?) many years ago and have never done it since.................

Intresting Lib.

When you say "Historical documents, recognised as sources by all manner of people" who were these people ? were they by anychance employed by the church or had strong religious beliefs.

So the bible had been translated, re-translated , words replaced, written, re-written, re-written again yet there still is no proof that it wasnt just a childs story that has been blown out fo all proportion or the roman records that that you mention are actually legit and people are to supose beleive that the meaning if true has not be lost from the original text. How does the church know that it hasnt got the meaning and translation wrong.

Islam or the Koran claims that god is Mohamed and as this person jesus is from that part of the world how does the church know that though the loss of translation from aincient hebrew text that there translation is right; if that is the case would that meen the real religion could be Islam and every christian is really a muslim.

I know people find comfort in thinking that there is a god, gods, prophets and whatever else but religion has to many flaws, mis-interpretations and un-answerd questions to be believed.

If religion was put on trial in a court it would be given life imprisonment without no chance of parol or the death sentance for war crimes, acts of cruelty and a lot more brutal things and i would think that if there is a heaven and hell anyone who supports and belives in any religion would go straight to hell for supporting and beleiving in it as then are they not as guilty then as the religion its self.

Kinda makes you think

Hi Cornish

Yes some of the people reading the historical documents were I am sure possibly employed by the church. But most of them were employed by universities all around the world, archaeologists, and historians.

And yes, you are right, there is concern that people have misunderstood the original meaning of the text which is why you have swarms of people claiming that they have the 'true' path to God. And it is also the reason why some people learn Ancient Greek and Ancient Hebrew in order to be able to understand things a bit better and know what the stories say for themselves. And there is no such thing as THE Bible as there are hundreds of translations across time. A translation into English 600 years ago, might have included a mistake that has been translated and retransalated down into the English language since. Or the word used has been changed and the one we use instead doesn't carry the original meaning.

Your question was: how does the church know that it hasn't got the meaning and translation wrong? The short answer is: it doesn't. But let's be clear. Which church are you talking of? The Greek Orthodox? The Catholic? The Lutheran? The Church of England? The Society of Friends or Quakers? The Russian Orthodox? The Baptist? The Methodists? The Presbyterians? The United Reformed? The Mormon? And these are just the different churches that I can think of from the top of my head.

There is proof that it wasn't just a child's story as children had no rights or authority. The men did. So if it is a load of rubbish, as you claim, then it is a MAN'S load of rubbish as they are the only ones who were listened to in the first place and it is a MAN who had the idea in the first place. And it is also a MAN who wrote it down as they were the only ones who were educated for many many many years. And it is also a MAN who passed it onto other MEN.

Islam does not claim that God is Mohamed. Islam teaches that there is only one God, the same God as Jews and Christians. Just as Moses was a prophet, so was Mohammed - a man who received revelations from God. Muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet too, just a man, not the son of God. You can think of the message of God as being released in editions. The first edition is Judaism, the 2nd edition is Christianity and the 3rd edition is Islam. The word Islam means submission (to the will of God).

There are three religions that claim to have come from Abraham - Judaism, Christianity and Islam. More people have died because of these three religions than any other and mainly because each religion claims to have the way. This especially applies to Christianity and Islam. Your guess is as good as mine as to what way is the 'right' way.

If religion has too many questions without answers in order to be believed, then what is the alternative? A world that has hatred and violence with no hope of peace? A world in which there is nothing to believe in and that you have no opportunity to feel like you are doing something?

I think that there is alot of evidence to support the Big Bang Theory. But I have a few questions on that myself.

If there was a big bang, what exploded?

What caused the big bang?

Why did it explode?

Science says that if you make something hot, very hot, as in boiling, then any water in it will dry up. So how could you have the early universe at billions of degrees in temperature for billions of years and still end up with water at the end of it?

And, most importantly, look at yourself in the mirror. Take a good look. Science says you're an accident. I argue not. I say I'm great and a bloody fantastic idea :biglaugh:

I disagree that religion would be found guilty - I think humanity would be found guilty. Humans beings decide to hurt, kidnap, rape, murder, rob, abuse, torture other people, animals and anything else it can think of. It is not religion that tells people to do it. Every religion, and I mean every religion, has a Golden Rule - treat others as you would want them to treat you, with respect and kindness. It's just a bit open to interpretation as to what that means.

Another question, now about heaven and hell. Do you believe in karma? If you reject heaven and hell as you do, then I assume that it might come down to whether or not you believe in God or the Devil. So what about 'cosmic energy', the belief that says that if you create positive energy, then positive energy comes back to you and if you create negative energy then negative energy comes back to you. Do you reject that as well?

And I think that while I am asking questions, please can I ask what you mean when you say 'religion'?

To smit, Karl Marx described religion as 'opium of the people'. Some have said (and I forget who, I just know I have heard of it) that a belief in the afterlife in which those who suffer on earth are rewarded in heaven means that people on earth come to accept their fate and do nothing or little to change it. THAT I find unacceptable.

Re: the twin towers, some people did say that it was God's will that it happened to punish people for their greed and selfishness. They said the Twin Towers was a symbol of that which is why it was destroyed. Me? I say an evil sick bunch of b*stards did a horrific unimaginable act of evil and seeing as they killed themselves and avoided justice and punishment, I hope there is a God who will hold them accountable for the evil they did.

I am a bit of a realist though and need to have something proven to me to be able to believe . This is why im still open minded about spirits and things. ................had an interesting experience with a ouiji board (sp?) many years ago and have never done it since.................

You say in two sentences that you need to be realistic and need something proven to be true but still are open minded about spirits and stuff. Doesn't a spirit imply something to be spirited from? And where does the spirit come from in the first place? I think ouiji boards are crap myself. Logically, how can a piece of wood ,and a pointer and a glass tell you anything? And it was so interesting that you haven't done it again in which case you have no real evidence upon which to base your opinion. You have one experience which has not been recreated since therefore you have no evidence to suggest that it was not a fake or an accident.

Personally I like to live and let live. I don't question what others believe and wouldn't expect them to question what I believe in. I think, in a very simplistic world, it would be a lot better wirld if everyone had the same view.

I am not overly religious. I would class myself Pagan if I wer eto try and define it. I believe in things we don't understand but don't believe in a God or a ruling being. I think that we should live in harmony with our world and each other (at the risk of sounding like a hippy which I am by no means)

I regards to Clairvoyance I know for a fact that is is very real. I have mediumship abilities and I am also slightly psychic. I would never use them for any reason apart from my reassurance and validation that there is a reason we are all here. There is a big difference between a psychic and a medium clairvoyant. A psychic could easily work off body language as well as Aura and gut instinct. Is there anything wrong with that? Using Psychic ability is all about opening yourself up and offering insights into a persons situation that may help them, not necessarily to second guess their life.

Mediums use communication through spirit. I don't understand how many people are very quick to believe in an Heaven or ilk and that life after death exists yet are so reluctant to believe that it is possible for us to communicate with this place. Everyone is capable of doing it to some extent.

Even if it turns out that I am wrong and that the things I have heard and seen are actually just a misfire of the braian, a figment of my imagination etc then so what, what harm has that done to anyone? It has given me reassurance, a sense of reason and something to look forward to. Even if there is nothing and when I die that is the end then I will not know that and for me that is comforting. Who has the right to take that away from me?

However I don't condone those that take advantage of those who are grieving or feel lost and sadly there are plenty of people out there who do this.

Hi k8bug79

I would really like to talk to you. Is it ok if I pm you? I am in awe of people like yourself, with that gift. It makes total sense to me that you can communicate with the 'other side' and I wish I could. :notworthy::notworthy:

Hi All,

I don't post much now but I often have a little read and I found I just had to ask a question about this thread.

Is Poms In Adelaide - The Migration Forum for members to ask for and receive advice on migration issues?

I agree I've posted some C**p in the past but what the hell is this thread all about? Am I missing something? Has this helped anybody with their migration questions?

Good luck to everybody who is already here and those that are about to embark on their new lives here.

Cheers

Martin

I had wanted to reply to this post before but have not had time. Still don't have long enough fo a long answer but just wanted to say, firstly, Libby is right - there is real proof that Jesus did exist and was killed, people would be a little foolish to question this as the evidence is there - like it or not. Fine to question whether you believe what Jesus said to be true, that's up to you.

Secondly, about why numerous wars / acts of terrorism have happened in the name of religion - well that is because we have free will.

People decided to do these things, not any religion. It is certainly not the will of God.

Third, I do not 'feel the need' to believe in God and go to Church, I just do. I find it quite patronising when people say you must feel the need / have something missing from your life to make you want to go to church. I was not lonely, or feeling the need to be reassured that there is life after death.

I never shove my beliefs down other people's throats and never would.... I do think that everone should be respectful of other people's relion / or lack of. There is absolutely no need to knock people just because they don't share your feeling & opinions on something.

I don't have any experience of clairvoyants other than watching 'Medium' on tv - one of my favourite programmes so can't really comment!! I do find it quite an interesting subject though.

And lastly, I too was wondering what on earth this all has to do with migration to Adelaide. Didn't think PIA had turned into a debating board. Not sure why a debate thread had to come out of someone's perfectly valid request for a recommendation, which is something that PIA is here for.

Hazel.

I don`t get involved with religion and politics arguments so I won`t comment on those things just wanted to add something about about mediums/clairvoyants.

I visited one (medium) in the UK about 4 years after my sister passed away, I was very sceptical but curiosity got the better of me and I went in. After a lengthy conversation with this woman I left a blubbering mess, soaked with tears!!! She told me things about my sister (and an Uncle who was tragically killed in a car crash) that only family and I would have known, it was freaky !!!

Anyway thats my 10c worth ;)

You see, it is PRECISELY because of experiences like you describe that I am desperate to go. But I am not sure I'm brave enough. And what if I find someone who is a load of cr*p?

Oh, decisions, decisions!

i'm, with last boy scout, i've had a spooky session with two clairvoyants/mediums in the past so i do think there's something in that but there are a lot of charlatans as well. dont do mainstream religion at all, but each to their own, it doesnt offend me. if reincarnation turns out to be real, i'm coming back as a cat cos they live the life of riley.
