It's a fact with any of the big supermarkets in the UK.

We were in the grocery trade in a niche market - supermarkets even had a go at little old us.

Fought back and had a healthy business doing what A**a could not do.

 

I really hope it does not happen here but looks as if it might.

Actually, I love the fact here that we visit our local butcher, We have a great local baker called Malcolm. I get my breads, cakes and pies, oh his pies are to die for. Even Maya who it can be said is not a great eater, wolfed down a whole quarter of chicken and veg pie!!!!

As hubbie works in Marden S/C I tend to go to the veg stall there. The fruit and veg tastes real if that makes sense. I don't think that I would ever go back to buying from one place only.

Reason why we did it in the UK, was to do with time. Everyone pretty much works all the hours going and if you need something at 1am, tescos is always open. very sad indeed but true.

mmmm!! why do so many miss TESCO...do we forget that this store has crept into every nook and cranny of the uk...pushing out the small business ..closing alot of high street shops that just cant compete..drawing you in then raising the prices till you want to try else where to try to save money...but theres nowhere left to try..nice thing here in Adelaide is all the different shops..loads of choice...soon there will be no uk..just THE UNITED TESCO:goofy:

I would rather have UK supermarkets, I'd prefer to buy everything in one place. Than trailing around the butchers, fruit and veg, bakery & booze.

 

Its a pain in the butt that the shops shut at 5pm on a Sat.

 

I liked supermarket bakery's, more choice and lots cheaper. I liked having the choice of choco biscuits beside Tim Tams.

 

I also liked the pre packed sarni's and mine never tasted of cardboard.

i hear ya..but is it not the fact there are loads of shops that help support Aussie economy ...therefore makin it a better place to live..only a thought!!

Maybe but they are so overpriced and offer very little choice. I personally dont want to spend my time driving miles between greengrocers and butchers even if I am supporting the aussie economy.

 

I would love to see a Tesco open here although I know they never will!!

I agree. In an ideal world we would all visit the bakers, butchers, greengrocers etc and get the best produce at the best prices and support the small shops. It's not an ideal world and we don't all do that. Tesco or Morrisons would show Coles how it's done.

I agree that it would be easier if the shops stayed open longer at the weekend, but I find 8pm or 9pm in the week is late enough for me.

 

In the UK, I never shopped in Tescos for 2 reasons;

 

1. I found their food to be of substandard quality compared to the likes of Sainsburys and Waitrose. I would buy my 'fancy' stuff in those stores and my basics in Asda which was cheaper than Tescos anyway. Plus topping up with bread, milk, veggies etc from the local shops in our area.

 

2. Friends of mine owned a small Spar shop in a pretty little village in South Wales. Tesco bought up the row of houses opposite the shops and converted them into a Tesco Local. To bribe the council into allowing them to do this, they paid for a new road. Once the shop was built, the other little shops, including my friend's Spar went out of business. they then bought up a block of land and tried to get permission for a superstore. Of course getting access to the superstore, would mean demolishing the Tesco Local - and ripping the heart out of the village. Thankfully the local uproar was enough for them to be refused permission - for now.

 

Don't forget it was Tesco who sold watered down petrol and ruined a lot of car engines in their quest to increase profits too.

 

That's how Tesco operate and I hope it doesn't happen here.

Generally here the smaller specialist shops actually work out cheaper than the supermarkets, and I don't miss Tesco at all..apart from the Chicken Caesar Wraps they used to do! Even in the six years I've been here the supermarkets have got loads better though - but it's just a case of convenience. If you're on a tight budget, it is far better to buy from specialist shops, and if you want to support South Australian suppliers rather than interstate, choose Foodland rather than Coles or Woolworths!

Hmm, I have to say that my personal supermarket experience is nowhere near as good as I used to have back in the UK. I used to love browsing round all the different depts in asda and tesco then going for a coffee at the end. Most of my kids clothes came from there as they were fashionable, cheap and washed well an there were always bargains to be had with BOGOF etc! And internet shopping/delivery was an absolute godsend - especially as I was pregnant for 2 years then had 2 newborns to contend with!!!

 

Having said that, I do enjoy the fact that I go to the butchers and the greengrocers and have a friendly chat with everyone, but it is time consuming and to be honest, the money I might save by going to local businesses is soon eaten up by the cost of the petrol getting to them all!!!!

I am getting used to the fact that supermarkets here are not the same and shot be expected to be, and apart from looking forward to seeing my much loved and missed family, one of the biggest things I am looking forward to is that trip to the supermarket with my mum!!!!
