Adelaide/Sydney by train

Has anyone ever travelled Adelaide to Sydney by train, is it ever late, like real late, my oh wants to do it, she reckons it takes 24 hours, i can't see the point, from my front door by plane it takes 4 hours.

I used to do it back in the UK and Europe as my train travel was more or less free ( worked for BR) but i cannot see the point here.

I did it several years ago, in a sleeper. I wouldn't do it any way other than the sleeper, as it is just too long. It is a lot of country to cover. A lot of it is travel in the dark, depending what time of the year you go. I went in late April. I found the return trip, from Sydney, more interesting. Not sure I would do it again with the airfares so cheap.

The train was about 2 hours late into Sydney.

Train travel one way is a relaxing way to travel if you have time. The part of the trip through the Adelaide hills is very pretty. Sleepers are definitely the way to go and the meals in the dining car are not bad either.
