Can anyone answer the following, we are off to UK next year, plan on getting travel insurance for cancellation/loss of luggage, BUT do we need medical insurance or are we still entitled to NHS treatment?

how long an answer are you after?

All emergency treatment is free in the UK.

If you are on a temporary visa, you can probably be considered ordinarily resident in the UK, and are entitled to full NHS.

If you've previously lived in the UK for ten years and are working abroad for up to 5 yrs, then again, full NHS entitlements.

If you're PR in australia, you're entitled to reciprocal NHS. (i.e. treatment for a condition that arises while you're in the UK)

Something to think about... Repatriation back to australia will only be covered under travel insurance.

n.b. If you want to get travel insurance and aren't PR yet, then read the fine print, many policies only cover people with PR visas. Some companies will cover you if you've lived in australia for the past three months and are starting and ending your trip in australia (columbus (sp?) does this, they're who I got cover with last time)

Eligibility for free hospital treatment under the NHS : Department of Health - Health care

If you are a temporary resident then cover more from flight centre will cover you for everything. its a bit more expensive than other places but children under 18 are on the policy for free and you have the option of paying more and getting no excess
