Reading this article online at Adelidenow this morning, interesting to read the the posted comments, seems like no one agrees,

It's worth remembering that Islam is a religion, not a race. A more appropriate question would be "Is Adelaide bigoted from a religious perspective?"

 

My opinion is that it isn't, in the simple sense.

This one is a difficult one. To answer the title of your thread.... It's my personal experience that there is less racism in Australia than I expected. When overseas, the portrayal of Australia and Austrlians as being racist is very strong but I think that it's less. They speak their mind on everything and if race is the subject...they just say it as they see it. It doesn't make them more racist than anyone else...just more blunt and honest! Australains do voice their thought about dole bludgers, welfare recipients, criminal activity...and there's a higher percentage of "minority races" involved in these activities.

 

On the Muslim issue concerning schools, halaal food, mosques etc. Adelaide has a very small Muslim population in comparison to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth etc. The Muslim communities do tend to congregate together where the facilities like schools, shops, prayer etc are all located. There's a mosque in town and there's another one in Marion but there's nothing in the south and for a Muslim community to move and live this side of the world would mean a considerable amount of travel time for them. You can't have it both ways...you can't bemoan the fact that certain racial or religious groups enclave together and then on the other side complain when they ask for facilities outside their enclaves to allow them to integrate / assimilate into Australian society. Assimilation doesn't mean converting to Christianity or no longer eating halaal meat.

With the continuing influx of migrants from all over the world it a reality that Australian society must be influenced and change. It's peoples resistance to this that may be seem as being racist or xenophobic.

this is my personal opinion and others will see it different but here it goes!!!

when we were moving here we had to sign a declaration to say we would take on and embrace in the Australian way of life. i believe we do do that and have changed our life style etc and feel this has helped us fit in with life here just great. Australia isnt a muslim country so i do not beieve they should have to provide halai school meals etc and ive heard that a school has now stopped everyone sending xmas cards as it offends muslims. i dont think thats exceptable. why should this country or any other have to change its ways and tradions as some immigrants have decided to move here??? everyone has a choice where they decide to live and surly when you start a new life like many people on here as i have read try to find where is suitable for your needs and like the declaration says "embrace in the australian way of life"

I agree with 'embracing the Australian way of life' As Rudd said, this is a Christian country that tolerates other religions, but it is a Christian country.

 

I came here as a Scotsman with a South African life experience. That said, I do not demand to drive as fast as I could in South Africa. I don't demand that haggis be sold at Foodlands, nor do I whinge when I can't get to see my favourite soccer team playing on the telly.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about that - never heard the UK open parliament with a prayer like they do here. I don't think Australia is non-religious at all - and the predominant religions are Christian ones.

 

Julia Gillard is the first prime minister for quite a while that hasn't been "religious" - hence why Tony Abbott (aka The Mad Monk) played the religion card during the election.

Australia was founded by Christians from the UK. IMO it is a predominatly chrisian country, even though i am not religious in the slightest.

Nearly 70% of Australians profess to being Christian and it has been by far the most influential religion in Australia's history. It was built on Christian principles and its public holidays are Christian-faith related. Adelaide is known as the City of Churches and I'm pretty sure its NOT because of the many mosques we have. Most of the country's landmark events and traditions e.g. Anzac Day and Australia Day are marked with Christian-faith traditions e.g. the Dawn Service. The Australian was designed to reflect Christian virtues. I don't think we should be debating this point....

Completely agree. And if your religion involves extra costs, including muslim only schools, then i shouldn't have to pay for them. Pretty sure there is nothing racist in having that belief? If you want to live in a muslim coutry, and be taught at a muslim school, then go there.

i have to admit my opinion and agree that do what you want when you want but dont force itr down others throats. im studying fitness at tafe and came across a debate we have been discussing obesity, fitness nutrition etc the debate is now that a particular area in adelaide has lots of muslims and they are demanding the local council pay for curtains to be put up at the public pool so no one can see in and allow muslim women only to go in at certain times!!!! this is costing the authority thousands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why oh why should the change the ruling on the public pool to women only days and spend that money on curtains???????? dont like the rules dont go! simple build your own beep beep pool!!!! the money being WASTED on these curtains could have been spent else where to benifit all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont class myself as racist but i do sometimes wonder when i hear things like this if i went to the council could i ask for a under 30s day or fat people only day etc etc would i get granted this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wouldn't allowing burkinis be much cheaper for the pool than installing curtains???

 

(I don't have objections to the womens sessions if enough women want them - there are many non-muslim women who feel more comfortable excercising in an all female environment - it's not like anyone can go swim anytime anyway at many pools, as there are often family play sessions, or lane only swimming, or over 50s sessions, or times when the pool is shut to the public for club swimming sessions.)

Yes just finished training 4 lovely Asian people at work today on the way home they were verbally assaulted and had a beer bottle thrown at them from a car, just one of the many attacks that these people never report

For the answer in the title, Yes. I agree with the answers regarding you want it, you pay for it and don't inflict on others.

Would be good to see more effort from those against all this to be against the gun crime / culture in Adelaide alone, practically every day a report of someone being shot/killed in and around Adelaide. It costs more for this than the Islam schools request .........A persons LIFE !

I play pool in a predominately Oz team and they're not racist thay say it how it is, hate people tossing it off and getting stuff for nothing....be it anyone...they are not racist they just dnt like any one taking their country for a ride....

totally agree HG;

Many of us newbies to Australia are not entitled to dole (for 2 years), have to contribute to the system to qualify for healthcare......and are EXPECTED to to pay some sum for educating our children, getting dental treatment etc etc.

 

I feel for assylum seekers, the poor unfortunates who are genuinely tormented in the home countries and agree that we can and should help those less fortunate....just not to the detriment of the nation!

 

Colour, religion, and race are not issues here, until migrants make so...........

 

I believe that there is an element of Xenophobia (not xenonphobia!) in any walk of life; it is not particular to Adelaide, Australia, Merseyside or or any other place you care to mention.

 

The fact that certain groups are demanding special consideration only serves to agitate the masses.........

 

The sad reality is: the minute a person disagrees with ANY immigrant from any creed, colour, social level.....they are labelled as BIGOTS.....and I for 1 had enough of that in the (y)UK...........thats partly why i came here.

Just as a small aside here..............

to the best of my knowledge, the JEWISH community is NOT insisting that the tax payer funds specialist schools, curtains for public swimming pools, or any other special consideration other than the matter that migrants, of any standing, undergo a short period of probation whilst awaiting residency! nor are they demanding inclusion of judaic protocols in the community..................unlike those xxxx xxxx who want sharia law imposed, not just included!

 

So bite me for my non anti-semetic leanings, mate, and my christian distrust of sharia law, and my feminine belief that i am equal to anyone.
