Don't take this as a given. Its only for people on a permanent visa and for those who have not activated it yet is the other thing iirc. It doesn't apply just because you are moving to Aus. Only if its the right type of visa.

 

Some people on non permanent visas have gotten 5kg extra (over the standard weight limit) out of SA after a few emails and a bit of effort but I'd not bank on that either.

We used the excess baggage company at Heathrow there should be one @ MCR too....worked out heaps cheaper than SIA excess baggage just had to wait a little bit longer in Adelaide for our stuff to arrive.

would definitely recommend sending a box with one of the excess baggage companies rather than paying 40 quid a kilo. You can usually get away with one or two kilos over the limit, but any more than that and you'll be paying out big time.

To get your excess baggage it is a permanent unrestricted visa SA required.

Also email them and get it in an email - for when you check in - cause some of the staff don't know about it. Also make sure you have your visa and letter.

Yes make sure you have your email and visa grant letter, the check in staff are unaware of the excess allowance and they need to see confirmation of the visa. We flew last week with them and we had a very nice man on the check in desk who wasn't aware of the extra allowance but checked this with a manager and then also waivered the 8 KG's we were over on top of the additional allowance we had, I think we were very luckily as you see so many posts where other's have had to pay the excess. The service was excellent with Singapore, have a good flight Claire:)
