18 months and still on the rollercoaster

just thought we would give a quick update on the last 18months since we arrived, where to begin pro's and cons we have met some lovely people who have generaly been English, Scottish or Welsh very few Aussies appart from work collegues, this has not been a deliberate thing but i suppose we have things in common with people from th UK, are new found scouse friends have been a god send as has the Kentish maid.

Housing has been an issue much to do with the exchange rates so having to rent as we are not prepared to sell in the UK yet, we have had 3 landlords firstly Tamara in Christies beach we were their for the first month which was absolutley fine, then we moved to Moana with landlords who we thought were brilliant we socialised together, babysat for them etc they could not have been more helpful, really thought we had fallen on our feet until that fateful day at McClaren Vale on yet another social occassion when it all went mad, i think the moral of this story is beware of who you trust as it takes time to get to know people!!!!!!! our 3rd landlord has been great but we have been much more careful about mixing buisness with pleasure.

I have had no issues finding work and i have had a couple of promotions since starting work which has been very good for my career as a nurse, our daughter has also done very well since she arrived a totally different person who left the UK she is 20 and has had a ball since she arrived she has made some wonderfull new friends and completely changed her life, our son is 22 and is looking to go into the mines very soon which will be good for him.

We have totaly embraced the Adelaide lifestyle love the cafe culture, and enjoying exploring the area, especially the beaches, quite supprised at the cost of living we still convert back into pounds however this is getting less frequent now, the weather is just wonderful both winter and summer, still struggle with the aussie drivers they are lovely people but put them behind the wheel of a car and they think they are lewis hamilton, I have never seen so many rear end shunts!!!!

If any newbies read this a word of warning where ever you rent a house make sure you have heating and aircon because you will need it don't be lulled into a false sense of security it might be hot now hence the need for aircon but in the winter you will need heating this is mainly due to the way the houses are built they have no insulation at all so they do get cold in the winter hence the heating.

we remain on the rollercoaster but as a whole we have few regrets about the decision we made to emigrate it has been the hardest thing we have ever done we miss family and friends more than we could have imagined but everyone we speak to feels the same we look forward to the visits from home so far we have had the inlaws over and that was great.

Hi Maria

Totally agree with you - We have been here nearly 5 years ago and many of the people we first met turned out not to be what we thought -its a bit of a rude awakening when it first happens - but hey ho, life goes on and you realise that it takes time to make real friends - its generally people who have something really in common with, rather than just being in the same boat in terms of migrating.

It sounds like your children are happy here - which is a big hurdle, so thats good - just need to concentrate on yourselves now lol. We have our inlaws arriving this weekend and we are all so excited - my girls especially. It does mean that the time we do have with loved ones - are special.

I might be wrong, but I think I may have had a coffee with you when you first arrived in Moana - at BBs....with a certain person. Anyway, I hope you continue the Adelaide lifestyle - I for one, think we are such lucky bunnies!
