As the title says really - was chatting to a couple of backpackers yesterday who are visiting Adelaide, after previously being in Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane ... and they were saying how much more expensive everything (I guess they meant food and drink mainly) is here in Adelaide than in Melbourne and Brisbane.
Perth apparently is even worse but there are a lot of much higher earners there because of the mines (again, we've got mines here too - why don't we have such overinflated salaries? Apart from in Coober Pedy I guess...)
I keep rationalising to my visiting parents that they think stuff here is particularly expensive now because they are converting at a 1.38 rate, whereas I convert wages and costs at 2.5 to the pound, and I know that the high dollar makes things very pricey here nowadays to anyone who's had to convert from their european currency, but now I wonder if we in sleepy Adelaide are getting even a worse deal! How comes Melbourne is cheaper? Do we have a premium put on everything because Adelaide has nicer weather and people??
