i have heard of this a few times before but more in relation to a bbq, bring a plate generally meant bring your own meat and they will cook it for you, always found it bizzare that you get invited to a bbq or a party and get asked to bring your own food and drinks

Well Sarah, we had one of those bring a plate affairs at christmas. We brought mince pies and stuff but i noticed that a few of the mums brought those things called 'fairy bread' or something. Looks like a piece of bread cut with a cookie cutter and covered in hundreds and thousands - they seemed to be really popular, other things might be the mini pies that you can get in Coles frozen, or like you said sausage rolls. Could go for the healthy watermelon and mixed fruit platter, but is it just kids or adults too ?.

Good luck with that one, let me know on friday what happened.

yeh, just take a plate of something to be shared - sometimes places will get the girls to bring sweet stuff, the boys to bring savoury, but if you haven't been given any guidelines then take your choice! Mine sometimes take a plate of chopped up fruit, or maybe just a plate of timtams, or a box of shapes, or some cubed cheese - anything that takes your fancy!

I think this phenomenon of bringing Food and Drink to Friends BBQ'S or Parties is actually a good idea.It can be very expensive to throw a Party here,especially for recently arrived Poms,who are finding things costly at first,yet need to cement new friendships with home socialising,Parties etc.

i totally get your point, and its an aussie thing to do but me personally,i wouldnt throw a party if i couldnt afford but thats just me

I did go to one once where someone kept their crisps in their handbag!!!!

 

Have seen people keep their drinks to themselves then use others when theirs runs out :wideeyed:

Worse still take a couple of bottles and the host puts them in their cupboard :nah:

 

Conversely to that most of our friends just leave drinks behind for Ron . . . lateR on.

Nah i'm stashing them up 'till they go to 20cents !

 

The boys take them down every few months but yesterday the dog tore open the empty beer cartons and we had about 50 empty beer bottles down the side of the house :arghh:

 

Sometimes working back can have it's advantages :wink:

I think it's a brilliant thing to do!

 

It means we can get together frequently without huge expenditure or planning.

 

When the kids were younger we used to fire up the barbie at one or other's house and all contribute and it worked well - we all had to feed our families, this just meant we did it together. Kids loved it!

 

Thinking about it, people have always brought a plate when we've had parties too! We're not tight but it is so nice not to spend the whole day cooking or preparing lots of salads etc. Share the load, hey?!

 

After all, it's about spending time together, sharing and having a laugh :)

I don't think it's an issue for what you can or cannot afford ...it's more of a sense of community and sharing food with friends and feeling that, if everyone is contributing, everyone feels part of the event rather than obliged to 'return the favour'. People regularly take food items that represent their culture or something they make --- the sense of sharing can be very rewarding.
