West Lakes video - 1974

Great video. Yes the state was very progressive under Dunstan and Des Corcoran (who was in the video) who I think was Deputy Premier at the time. How conservative and even reactionary we are now.

And I think I glanced the great Barrie Robran in the footy bit.

I'm going to get very maudlin now :dull:

That's a classic! West lakes is still a very nice area, and still looks good. It's interesting to see that it was deliberately designed with planning restrictions to avoid unsightly fences and sheds - so many areas are such a mish-mash of styles and free for all (that would never get approved in the UK). It certainly was well designed. Nowadays some of the houses are getting knocked down and replaced with new ones, the typical 70s West Lakes home is pretty dated (if it hasn't been modernised over the years). Lots of spanish style arches, bare interior brick walls, built-in bars in the rumpus room, brown/olive green/orange kitchens. The island (Delphin Island) has some fabulous homes but lacks any shops or eateries/pubs. Most of the plans came to fruition (the football oval, shopping centre, sailing/water activities), but the secondary school closed down many years ago and there is only one primary school at West Lakes Shore.
