Im not from SA so cannot comment on the job opportunities down there, but I do know in the mining industry there is so much hatred towards new immigrants coming in taking on jobs that OUR locals are more than qualified to do.
The same up in Far North Queensland the backpackers are taking the jobs from our local kids. It's so easy for businesses to drop staff this way whenever they want. Most jobs these days start off as casual, if you are lucky you may then get permanent part time and if very lucky permanent full time.
Diane mentioned the main forum Pomsinoz for those over there you, like us, will probably have seen the rise in people who have been given sponsorship they sell up everything in the UK, relocate their family across the world, start a new life, only for a couple of months later being told they are no longer needed and have 28 days to find another company to take on the sponsorship or move home. This is terrible and something needs to be put in place to stop this happening to these poor families. Surely its better they are refused entry at the beginning than going through all this.
In regards to what this forum is about.. Well its about everything, migration, life in Adelaide/Australia, pros and cons. It's not a forum just for the British, we have many different nationalities.
As someone whose done the move recently, though on a permanent residency visa, I think it's great that people are prepared to discuss topics like this and share their opinions. What I don't understand is why people get their knickers in such a twist when people voice something they don't like or don't want to hear. I think it's something to do with internet forums.
Even though I am on a PR, my take on it is this - we are guests in Australia for the first 4 years until we can apply for citizenship, that we are incredibly lucky to being able to experience living in Australia and that by coming with an open mind, a positive attitude and by not taking ourselves too seriously, we'll do alright.

I realise threads like this are hard for people who are set on their new life down under. I pray it all works out for you and you land on your feet. At the end of the day we all want a better life for ourselves and families, wherever that may be.
