      Emigrating Feb 2012

      Hello

I am new to the forum, but have followed this forum along with Poms in Oz for the last three years nearly. That is how long it has taken us to gain our permanent residence visa! I never thought the day would come and now that it has, I am getting really nervous about our move to Adelaide in Feb 2012. I am a Primary Teacher with 6 years experience and have read how hard it is to secure a position, so for now I am just concentrating on finding an area in Adelaide to live with my husband and daughter who is 12 years old.

I was wondering if anybody out there could give me any advice on the following:

Which would be the best areas for us to live? There are so many that we have looked at, but we just can't decide. We have never been to Oz before, so we really are finding it hard to make the choice.

Also which schools would be good to consider for our daughter, would she be in Secondary School or would she need to repeat a year in Primary, not sure how it all works?

The last thing is any advice on securing rentals would be very much appreciated. I know these questions must be posted all the time, but any help would be great.

      Hello! Congratulations on the visa!!
I'm a Primary Teacher too- just starting my registration and going to book my First Aid and Mandatory Child Protoection course as we go over in Jan.

My advice would be to research areas and check out realestate.com for ideas of houses/areas but dont decide until you are there. Get a holiday rental for a while and have a look around- lots of rental owners on here... we're going with http://warmwelcome.webs.com also have agoogle look at Roo rentals and www.coastandvinesrentals.com.au/

Sorry cant help with the schools..... but shout if you need anything regarding teaching registration etc .... goodluck x

      Hi Silverload

Congratulations on finally getting your visa! Bet you cant wait to get here now.

Deciding on an area is a difficult one - especially if you havent visited here beforehand. We hadnt, and just decided whether we'd like to live somewhere leafy, in the hills or near the sea. The decided the latter and then started to look in those areas.

There really are many lovely suburbs about and its all about personal choice. We live in Moana, and also have a short term fully furnished rental there too. Its a family friendly beach suburb and the beach is just gorgeous.... We have a 14 & 11 year old daughters, who both go to Tatachillia Lutheran College - (its a private school and we are very pleased with it)..but there are many other schools in the area to choose from.

I would say your 12 year old daughter would be in year 7 or possibly year 8 depending on the month of her birthday.

      Hello Sarah,

Thanks for your reply. At present we live in a coastal area in the UK, so would not mind living in a similar type of area. Having said that though, we would consider other types of area. We need obviously to secure a rental and would then need to have a good look around, particularly at schools for Rayanne, whose birthday is in November. I think this is where we are stuck at the minute, so we will check out the places you have mentioned.

      Hello Pixie

Thanks for the reply, it's nice to see another Primary Teacher going over at a similar time. Have you started to fill in your registration form whilst over here, and how difficult is it to book the two courses? Where in Adelaide are you moving to? I am really nervous as it will be the first time I will not have a job to move into, from what I have read on various forums, it seems to be difficult to secure work as a Primary Teacher, which I find strange as SA are sponsoring teachers. However, we are coming over with an open mind. Let me know how you get on with the courses and I wish you lots of luck with the move. xx

Yeah Ive started my teacher registration form as there is 2 parts:
      1) to get skills recognised (even though i did this for visa!) by SA
      2) once in SA and courses completed then another form to register

As for the courses, Ive been looking today and there seems to be availability for February they're only 1 or 2 days courses and there is a few places you can do it... give me a shout if you want the links etc.
From what I know there arent many permanent teaching opportunities but I approached Randstad and they seem keen to register me for supply (or relief) teaching so I'm hopeful. What age group or speciality do you have? I have 6 years in teaching too- maybe we could meet up once you arrive? x

That sounds like a plan to me, meeting up would be great! At present, I teach Year 6, but have taught Year 4 and Year 5 (which I loved), I have been an ICT Co-ordinator and am now a Maths and Gifted & Talented Co-ordinator in my present school. It's crazy to have your qualifications assessed again, but they have to justify their jobs and taking our money some how. What is your specialism and year group? I would appreciate it if you could send me the links for the registration etc and we look forward to seeing you over there. Where is it that you plan to stay initially? xx
