best uni for science

Hi, Does anyone have kids at uni in Adelaide/ go to uni themselves specifically doing a science degree ? My son is studying the three sciences at A level in the UK currently and any info would be a great help.

Perhaps you and your son could look at

www.flinders.edu.au

It depends what line of science your son is interested in. The kids we know that are studying nano tech, forensics etc are at Flinders but Adelaide is known for the engineering faculty as well as the animal science.

I love Adelaide Uni for the history around it and my daughter spent her first semester there but transferred to Flinders to be nearer to home - and with her mates from high school lol!

The one thing she did mutter at me before going out, was that maths was an important subject to have and certainly the kids that did specialist maths at high school seem to be more comfortable with the maths element of their study (based on the six I know, so hardly a representative sample lol!). I've mentioned it in case you feel it might be a good question to ask whichever uni your son fancies.

He did begin doing the three sciences and maths but after one year he dropped maths as he found it was taking up too much time going over it to try and get his head round it ! The problems that I have with getting him to do his own research is that he doesn't really want to come and so resents anything to do with the whole move ! You have helped though so I can slip that info in a converstion somewhere - I bet the nanotech would interest him.

Oh Lisa, I feel for you!
If it helps at all, my daughter reckons that the students doing very specialist stuff such as nano tech find it easier to make new connections. Her degrees (double) are more popular and can have literally hundreds of students attending lectures. Although she knew other kids there because of high school etc, it was a more fluid population than for her friends that were doing Science at Flinders. They got to see pretty much the same kids at most lectures. So it might be easier for him to find new mates. And, as with any uni I guess, there are some great clubs and opportunites there.
I'm sure he'll have heaps of fun here. In a way, it seems quite a good time to come over because in the UK kids rarely live near the uni they attend (that's just my experience so who knows!) so you have to start afresh. Unis here are aware of kids who might be from rural areas, overseas etc and run special get togethers for them, specially before uni starts, so he might be able to get some support from that. Basically, the unis want success for the kids they accept and seem to be ready to help when needed.

Maybe we are making small break throughs with him, sometimes we can even have a conversation without it resulting in an argument !!
I have found out that flinders have an open day in august not long after we are due to arrive so that will be a help.
