Severe Dyslexia

Im posting on this subject again as nearly a year has passed since my previous post regarding mild dyslexia. My 9 year old son has just had his full assessment completed at Dyslexia Action Uk and it has come back that he is severely dyslexic, although current County Councils locally to us do not provide statementing just for dyslexia!!!. (for those that know me we moved out to Adelaide March 2011 but had to come back end of August 2011 due to problems with my son and a very sick step mum) we are now, madly considering the move back for one final time!!! our experience in his previous school in Happy Valley was ok and they were providing general assistance for him in the area of reading. His problems lie within his short term memory which is extremely poor and his writing and spellings are currently 1.5 years behind his age, his reading level is just below his correct age. He is currently getting a lot of help from his UK school, do you think we are mad to give this all up to come back to Oz as we want to do the best for him education wise.

Please can any parents, teachers that are either going through Oz learning with a severely dyslexic child or teach at an Oz school, provide some up to date info on the current stance of help provided etc etc.

I have a friend who lives in Sydney and her son has dyslexia, he has a one to one do not know how she get it. Its not all bad I have it myself and it has never stopped me doing what I want. You just learn new was to do things. Good luck!

I think Dyslexia is very common. My friends husband was recently diagnosed. He didn't really realise anything was wrong but his wife probably noticed it more - he is has received some information and support and it has helped him. It hasn't held him back in the last couple of years he has started up his own business and he is doing well.

Regarding the schooling, my eldest doesn't have dyslexia but sits around the same standard as it sounds like Harvey does. The help he gets is adequate, not fantastic, but I think everyone is different and lots of people are just not acedemic, so I try not to get too concerned. You have experienced the schooling in both places, so I reckon you would be the best judge of where it is best to be for him. I do remember you saying you had dramas with the school here though, I know you have moved a lot - how does he cope with the changing schools? that might influence your decision?

Thanks for the replies guys, i'm not worried about him having dyslexia as know that he will be fine (dyslexia runs in the family)

Foxychick, yep we are bloody mad , moving around not affected the kids education, even spoke to specialists over here who said its all cool and nothing to do with his dyslexia, on paper they have actually been educated for longer than any UK or Oz kiddie due to time frames of moving around lol, poor kids havent had a school summer holiday for 2 years :-0. When he was in Happy Valley he hadnt been formally diagnosed, so he was hardly getting any assistance, hard to compare the schooling cause of that as here in UK he is getting assistance as he now has his report. Glad to hear your eldest is getting adequate help in school though. Makes a change to hear some positive experience
