      studying at tafe

Hello can anyone answer this question please

Is there any 'mature students' here studying at tafe that can tell me whether their 2 year course is classed as being full time or part time, and how many days per week it is and what hours, thank you

If I do decide to come to Adelaide on a student visa I need to plan around my daughter so have to see if it is workable around school runs and any part time work if im lucky to get any :)

Hi. Can't answer your question aboutlife at TAFE, but I am in the same position as you. I am just starting to apply to study at TAFE for a 2 year course and also have a child who is age 7. I currently work part time at the mment and have the luxury of taking him to and from school.

I would also be interested to find out if TAFE have the same holidays as the primary schools, so we can at least spend all of the holidays together.... GOOD LUCK. Would be great to hear how you get along..

I have friends who moved out about a year ago and they now know quite a few british peple who have gone over with various different qualifications (I know they were Plumbers, Hairdressers, can't remember the rest), but their qualifications weren't recognised in Oz. Apparently they are now having to pursue different careers than they originally planned.

This is what made me decide to study over there, at least when I apply for permanent residency, they will recognise the qualifications!!

If you look on the TAFE SA website you should be able to access courses and the hours.

You get good discounts on childcare when you are studying as well.

Hi Bagpuss and Poms in Skegness...

I am a mature student and have come on a student visa to do the welfare course at TAFE, which starts in a few weeks. I have no background in this, neither did I have any family or friends here, so came totally blind really. I have been here 5 weeks and think it is a great place.

TAFE fit the hours around me (within reason) so that I could work part time. In TAFE SA you can only do the course at Port Adelaide. You have to do 20 hours per week. Hours are 9 -12, 1-4 and I think there is the option to do 6-9. I will be doing Tue, Wed and Thu all day ie 9-12 and 1-4. This is at my request. And the options to do that were available. The course is classed as full time and you are entitled to work 20 hours per week during term time and any hours whilst off from college.

I am quite sure that the college terms are the same as the school terms. I dont have kids but I can tell you the breaks for me for 2008 and maybe someone else on here with kids can advise whether they are the same? Friday April 11th - Mon April 25th, Fri July 4th - Mon July 21st, Fri Sep 26th - Mon Oct 13th, Fri Dec 12th - Jan/Feb 2009.

I must add though that this particular course is much cheaper at other TAFE around the country, with Queensland I found the cheapest. Here it is $26000 which is a lot and in Queensland it is $17000...maybe something you want to consider? That said I wouldn't trade areas as I really enjoy the easy, relaxed, non-city like feel here.

Hope this helps you. Dont hesitate to get in touch if you have any further queries x

If you do decide to study in QLD take alook at the fees for your children to attend school first, I have found although the college fee is less the schooling fees are v.expensive, but that depends on if you have children and how many you have.
