Languages in Adelaide schools

Hi everyone,

Just wondering what modern foreign languages schools in the southern parts of Adelaide do, because I'm hoping to continue with Spanish when we (hopefully) get to Oz and maybe start up another language.

Also, is 'soccer' a big sport in Adelaide and what are the best schools for doing soccer as well?

Any information would be great

Hi Chris

Japanese is taught in schools. I don't know whether you will be able to continue learning Spanish.

Soccer is also played here.

In our area South of the city, the LOTE (language other than English) is German, although apparently this may change in the next couple of years. The odds seem to be favouring Mandarin (Northern Chinese) as the replacement.

Most High schools offer at least 2 languages, they can range from European languages to Asian ones. If the school doesn't offer a language it is possible to do it externally at the school of languages which is in town.

Henly High (not in the south) is a soccer programme school, other high schools will offer it as a team sport if there are enough interested. Usually there are, cos it's the fastest growing sport in primary school as parents don't like the roughness involved in aussie rules.

Well you've made a good start, calling it soccer! Better get used to that even though officially it IS Football - just try telling that to the locals!

Lots of clubs, most schools have school soccer teams (for both sexes), and you can start supporting Adelaide United, our local A-League team! There is also indoor soccer (5 a side) and Futsal during the offseason to keep your skills honed!

As for Spanish, you may struggle a little to find it on the 'normal' school curriculums (curricula?!) as they generally do Chinese, Japanese, German, Italian, French, Indonesian - but as Rachiegarlo says, check out the School of Languages in the City.

Thanks everyone! The information you've all given has been great :).

I don't think I could do Chinese(Mandarin) so maybe I'll have to look outside school to see if there are Spanish classes around. I'd be prepared to go further to find one.

I've been following Adelaide United for 2 years now, since we first began our interest in Australia :) I've even watched a few of the games on tele in England on the not-so-well-known channels and at ridiculous times. I couldn't stop supporting Arsenal for Adelaide though lol.

Not sure about schools in the southern suburbs but there are several in the northern suburbs that specialise in Spanish. You could start with Golden Grove High School that have a specialist program.
