My son had grommits fitted in his ears and needs 6 monthly checks - is this covered by Australian medical care or do we need to get private healthcare ?

Private Health care does not cover visits to the Doctors or Specialists. You pay, and Medicare will reimburse a percentage of the MBS fee, 85%, but if the specialist charges more than the MBS fee, then you will also pay that.

Is there free medical cover for children ? Also as my husband is Australian does it alter what we are entitled to ?

No, there isn't free medical cover for children.

If your husband is Australian, then the children would also be able to apply immediately for Australian citizenship, so I assume that they, and you as a spouse, would be entitled to the same cover as all citizens get.

Otherwise, it does depend on the visa you are granted.
