Check for lumps! (Skin cancer)

I'm feeling fortunate to go to a medical practice that has a doctor specialising in skin and lumps.

 

During a consult over something else a couple of weeks ago I mentioned to my doc that I had a lump appear on my chest.

 

"We'll have that whipped off lad"

 

Had the little fella removed this morning.Bigger piece than I thought ,about the size of a cup base ( cool looking stitches) .

 

The doc is 99% sure it was a skin cancer( just waiting for biopsy). Fortunately one of the more treatable ones that removal takes care of. But I'm going to have to regularly check and be aware of of differences in my skin a lot more now.

 

Mainly caused by exposure to the sun.

 

The culture here is to ask your doctor to look at any changes in your skin,lumps and stuff.

So please.,please - check regularly and be sun smart!!

Feeing a bit lucky today,perhaps I should go and buy a Lotto ticket!

Your in the best part of the world for treatment tho...i heard somewhere that Australia has the highest skin cancer rate but the best treatment and recovery than anywhere else.

Not long after we arrived here, I went visit our 'Meet and Greet' and he looked like someone had smashed him in the face with a baseball bat. Turns out he'd had a few skin lesions removed due to skin cancer. He was unmoved by it, as if it was the norm. Scared the s**t out of me - he used to work in the building trade and therefore was outside a lot, so kinda glad I was going to be office based.

WOW glad you checked it out... My friend went and the doc's there were professional etc and took it off quickly but she said exposure to sun was a factor but it's more down to genes!

Slip slap slop pretty much ll the time here, even in the winter if your going to be outside in the sun....

 

I always wear a hat when and put cream when working in the garden.

I had one removed from my neck a couple of months ago, and was in Flinders MC on Monday seeing a plastic surgeon to arrange to get another two removed from my nose and cheek. It pays to check any odd looking mole, lump and bump. Typically they look 'pearly', like a blister.

Yep,this fella was "Pearly".

I asked the Doc if I could have a look at what he had removed. Not for the squeamish and did not look threatening.

I too had a mole removed that turned out to be skin cancer. My doc told me sun was on the list of things to be careful of but genes did play a part in being prone to them, obviously baking in the sun all day every day with no protection is going to increase your risk (something I have never done). I have looked back on pictures of the offending thing and didnt have it in 2004 when I got married but it started to grow around 2008 (two years before moving here).

 

I have to have 6 monthly check ups now.

It is very itchy at the moment, but not as big as thought it would be after amount she took away. People say they cant see it but I can see it every day. Still glad it all gone and hopefully no more will appear, bad genes and sun dont mix very well do they. Hope yours heals quickly.

 

Got a friend who lives in brisbane, they moved to Oz in 2008. Lived in perth until middle of last year. He went to docs the other day about something and came out with stitches, took a mole away but thankfully it came back as nothing but a mole.

 

Doctor told me as it runs in your genes need to watch kids skin and any changes too (which is something would do anyway).

Itchy means healing so that's good

 

Several scars on my body so it will just blend in - like playing join the dots.

Mrs C saw an operation for one on a face (at one of her placements last year) and was amazed by the standard of the surgeons work, a work of art.

Well 6 years ago I had to have lump removed from my leg (leiomyosarcoma) and now have a scar about the size of a tea mugs base. The gp here in the uk was crap - I did go and see them 8 years ago and he said nothing to worry about just a cyst! Come back if it's bothering you!!!!

Anyway still have 6 month checks and that could continue for another 4 years!!!
