well my hubby just had an op on his knee which would have cost about 6,000. We went to Sportsmed to his specialist and he was booked in for the next week. I guess it is dependent on your individual circumstances. My husband is self employed and can't afford the time to wait if anything happens for the public system. We pay 160 a fortnight for hospital cover and extras, eg dental, but this is for us and three big kids, one of whom is not a student , is under 26 and lives at home, getting free dental off the plan.

How many people have medical insurance just wondering? We have not got any yet it just seems a waste of money for us a the mo if you save the $40 a month it approx cost and go when you need seems to make more sense to us.

You get socked with paying more for Medicare if you don't get insurance after a certain time (and insurance premiums go up based on your age when first taking it out). $40 a month would be very basic - ours is well over five times that amount and doesn't include everything!

Cheers, Jim

I've been looking at the website Medibank and Bupa.au but I'm confused as to what the options are...

Is the cover through Bupa 'full' cover in the same way as in the UK - i.e. we're covered for everything without out of pocket expenses? We were both born in 1986 and for the premium option it's some $100 a week!!

I suffer from IBS/Stomach that produces too much acid and am often going for prescriptions etc and we have a small baby so want to be well covered.

I've heard some people talk of 'top up' cover, but no amount of googling will find me that page...any advice appreciated!

Some work place companies have policies in place linked to health providers. At my place we get a discounted rate with mutual (only works out at about $5 a month) BUT we get our policy excesses paid for by our work place..which is $500 dollars. So if we use our hospital cover..it is completely free.
