Tonsil Operation

Does medicare cover for the elective tonsil operation? Has anybody been through similar operation?
Will appreciate if someone could share their experience and advice. Thank you.

I had an operation June this year, that involved bones in middle ear being replaced, new eardrum and bits of my skull removed due to a disease I have. I went public and therefore I was not required to pay anything. The waiting list was 3 months. I initially paid for all CT scans etc. I had superb care at Flinders and was in hospital for four days and they said I could stay as long as I wanted as the main thing was to get well.

I cannot fault the health system here at all. I have been for numerous check ups since and have to go back in for reconstructive surgery.

I guess it would be up to you either private or public but I honestly wonder what difference would have been had I been private. I got the top consultant and the best care I have ever had in hospital.

I'm going into Flinders just before Christmas for my gall bladder removal ...... not had to pay for anything, including an MRI and several blood tests, as it's all covered by Medicare.

My son had his tonsils removed 2 years ago when he was 11 following a referral from his GP. He had it done at Noarlunga Hospital and stayed in overnight. We didn't go private so didn't cost us anything, he was well looked after and it was a success, no tonsilitis since. Maybe a referral from a GP would be the way to go?

Yes if you get it done in a public hospital . Nursing care excellent :-)

My daughter (an adult) had terrible recurrent tonsilitis which needed intramuscula antibiotics at the GP's. Her Doctor said they were the worst he had seen and she was not to come off antibiotics until seen by an ENT specialist as she was at risk of endocarditis
(heart infection). He referred her to specialist twice (Flinders) and were told by Flinders that it would be at least a year before a specialist saw her let alone operate. We decided to go private rather than have her so ill. Similarly now we are waiting for a gastro appt which we have been told will be at least a year so not at all impressed with waiting times!

Agree on the waiting times we have been told that we will wait 12-18 months for our daughter to have an Endoscopy.

A lot of the waiting times are pretty scary here.We arent currently in the position to go private and its a source of great stress that your child has to wait that long to receive treatment,which means health issues are worsening in the meantime.
