Hi all,

Looking for advice for dental treatment for children, We (my 13yr old daughter) has braces fitted :goofy: and been treated through the NHS (who dont know we are in the process of going to oz) we didnt say as we thought they might turn her down. Well just got back from the hospital today and has been told she needs them in for another year, so she is a bit glum, hoping they would be out ready for australia.

Has anyone had a similar experience with there children, would a dentist take her treatment over in adelaide and how much would it cost?? and were kacking it now if the nhs bill us for the treatment so far.

Any info appreciated

I don't know much about the brace but I recently took my boys to the school dentist in Christies Beach, paid nothing as no treatment required, had to wait 3 weeks for an appt, very friendly & the next appt is July 2009 !!!! They don't have 6 monthly check ups unless of course you are having treatment.

I think if treatment is required its a one off bill of around $34.

For braces you would have to see an orthodontist - my daughter is in the process of being referred to one.

Yes an orthodontist would carry on the treatment - but it won't be cheap. Really depends on what needs to be done.

In my opinion treatment is of a much higher standard here - my dentist was digusted at some of my fillings. Be prepared for the worst and you might be suprised!

Can't comment on a price because everyone is different - but we expect to pay any where from 5 - 10 thousand dollars!!!

Hi

The school dental clinics charge a fee of $34 annually for treatment. Unfortunately orthodentics are not covered by this. Any orthodentist will take over your daughter's care. a full treatment including the putting on of braces costs between $3-5000., but as your daughter's treatment is halfway through, a reputable orthodentist should not charge you the full amount. You can join a health fund for just extras, for a reasonable amount. This covers you for dental, major dental, physio etc. Major dental though you have to serve a waiting period of a yr before you can claim. I wouldn't expect the NHS to charge you as until the day you leave you are entitled to everything.

Thanks to all for your info, i was'nt expecting any replies on this one, I knew i would have to pay something as its quite specialist treatment, some of her friends are going private treatment here is £3-5000!!!! i have heard the dental treatment is of a higher standard over in aus. At least we can set some cash aside now.

Thanks again

ask at your school for the south australian dental service. i have joined my girls and the first appointment is free and any treatment needed form the appointment is too. after that every appointment is $34 and that covers the treatment too.

hope that helps Jo xx

hi there

we have only been here nearly 4 months and have got my eldest daughter into an othodontist her. she is 9 and has been onthe NHS waiting list for 2 years to see one at home. her bottom jaw hasnt grown so she has an overbite.

my medical insurance i took out doesnt start paying out until next Feb, however i have paid about $400 for appointment, moulds and xrays so far. they have told me that any braces etc fitted will be staged payments, so i will have to pay an amount soon, but they sai they will invoice me another amount in Feb so the insurance will pick it up and then again the following year. i have expected to pay as Nick says between $4-8000 dollars but will get alot back from the insurance.

i took provate dental insurance out as soon as i could( when i got my medicare card) as i knew i would need to claim after a year.

dental work for you is not cheap either. i have just had a bridge fitted, ( my crown fell off day before i flew out) and thats going to cost me about $1500. the schools do a dental service which costs about $34 a year and covers the apointment and treatment needed.

but dont worry the dentists and orthodontist will work with you and if you have medical insurance they will let you can claim for.

Hi all,

I had braces fitted in November 2006 - but because we seem to move house ALL the time I am on my 5th Orthodontist and the braces are still on - and won't be off in time for Aus in April.

So can someone recommend a good Orthodontist in the South that I could see? I think I am nearing the end of my treatment (which is lucky as we couldn't afford some of the figures mentioned) so one that won't rip us off is needed!

Many thanks,

Alexis
