You pay for Medicare through your taxes. Most doctors will charge you something when you use it too. Children (as far as I know not having any) don't get free prescriptions.

Ambulance cover is not included.

Yep, no free prescriptions for children, also when you choose a gp get one that bulk bills then there is no cost when you visit :-)

hi

quick question do you need extre health insurance (private) if you have Medicare. Or is it just like in the UK its only if you want to be seen earlier and are willing to pay fro the privilledge

thank you

Kathy

if you are over 30 you need private health cover. I transferred my BUPA cover from UK to Australia.

It is your choice whether you get private health cover, at any age. It is just that the Government encourages it for over 30. They provide a rebate off the cost but this is determined by the age you join and your income. We get the 30% rebate and we pay $220 per month for the family (with the rebate - would be 30% more otherwise) that includes hospital cover and extras such as dental, eye wear, physio, remedial massage etc etc etc. I have a remedial massage at work most fortnights and claim the full cost back through insurance. We all see the dentist every 6months for check up and clean and pay very little if anything out of pocket. Also covers most of contact lenses cost for the year and a pair of standard new glasses per year. These costs would all be out of our own pocket otherwise. You need to look into what you can/would claim and determine if it is worth it for you. There are lots of different levels of insurance, so a lot of choice.

You still pay medicare even if you have private health cover, this is a tax, taken at source, so don't really notice it. Medicare covers seeing GPs and specialists, and anything you have done through a public hospital system as a public patient. There may be a 'gap' payment for these services, depending on what the Dr wants to charge you. Some 'bulk bill' ie don't charge anything extra.

You may well wait longer to see some-one through the public system, private insurance gives flexibility and more choice - but not necessarily better health care.
