has anyone had surgery under the public systm, we dont have private cover and i think i need my gallbladder out (had scan today its full of stones lol). Back to gp tomorrow but think she will suggest getting it out as its causing me grief!! Just wondering how long the wait is and if its worth self funding as i cant go on much longer with these attacks

Yes I've had major bowel surgery here in SA. I've also had laparoscopies and other little things done like that and various hospitals here. Can't fault the public system - it is excellent! Currently waiting on a hernia operation although not looking forward to that.

do u know what the waiting times are like? I had an endoscopy and didnt wait long about 5 weeks , (all part of getting to this conclusion lol). I need it out before xmas :biglaugh:i dont want xmas in pain or just eating bland food, my diet is restricted enough being coeliac and im frightened to eat anything in case it sets it off :arghh:

I know what you are going through Clare, I had to go on a diet for coeliac and lactose free after my op.

I'm seeing a consultant about my hernia next week but I'm not expecting the op to be this side of Christmas to be honest. I've waited 2 months for this appointment! Surgeons tend to go on holidays in December and January. You might be lucky. Ask your consultant if they can get you in before Christmas. Good luck! What hospital is it?

not been reffered yet i had my scan this morning which confirmed whats up, back to docs tomorrow but given its been causing me problems for 4 months i am almost certain she will refer me and if she doesnt i will be doing diy with a bread knife :biglaugh:. She was concerned on thurs and if i get a full blown attack i have to head off to emerg , which would speed things up i guess. Youd think they would do it for free as a perk of the job at ashford ;) .

Hope your not waiting too long hun, in mean time i have to stay away from anything fatty, cant eat dairy as that is agony, or lettuce funnily enough , chocolate, im ok with alchohol though thank god he he

Ouch, painful! Poor you Clare...........tho' i must say, from the avatar, you dont really qualify for the 5 F's do you? 2 perhaps, but i guess the erroneous bug struck you:sad:.

I have really bad episode after ice-cream, which for me, is a downer; still the pain goes after a bottle of wobbly water, or maybe i just dont care after that:biglaugh:

Paul, i'm going to be working at that hospital...........what's it really like from a patients point of view? Are the staff ok? the view is good, i know that, having watched the golfers during my visit, and planning my lunch break around the 3 or 4 nearest holes:)........

hi jane ...the staff were great, although i did panic a bit after the lady priest came and had a chat with me just before the pre-med!!the surgeon was great bloke, very funny and classless...he introduced me to the anaesthatist, and told me how brave i was being put to sleep by a greek male!!!all in all quit enjoyable considering i was having major lifesaving surgery:jiggy:me thinks it would be a nice place to work!

Hi Clare,

i'm working in flinders and have been getting around a variety of wards.

The staff are excellent and can't do enough for you. If there is something you are not happy about, you only have to mention it and they will do what they can to amend it.

Good luck with everything and you never know I could be helping to make your stay all the more pleasant. x
