Hi,

we have a couple, one large, one small, the small one cost 425 from the good guys, convair I think, it works well in rooms up to 20sq metres, the bigger you get the more noise you get so only buy a small one if you don't have a big room, remember you have to vent them outside, they come with a kit to allow you to fix the exhaust pipe to a widow reveal but it is normally only 1.5 to 2 metres long so it will need to be placed quite close to a window. Bunnings were doing a small one for $400 but my wife did not think it looked pretty.:)

We had a problem in our last rental, which had no aircon upstairs. After complaints to the landlord he finally agreed to pay for an evaporative portable airconditioner for our bedroom. Because of the design of the windows, we were unable to have a portable unit with an exhaust, so settled for a relatively cheap one from Harvey Norman which you had to fill with water at least once a day. It seemed to help with cooling things down a bit on 40C days, but was a bit noisy. Not an ideal solution, but it helped a bit. You often see them for sale secondhand, look on Ebay. Best of luck.
