Gas cars 10 yearly check

I can't find anything on the Internet saying exactly what proof you normally have that a car has had it's 10 yearly gas check.

My partner is looking at buying a second hand car which the dealer says the certificate has been lost for the 10 yearly gas check.

I'm pretty sure that on my last car when we had the gas check they put a new plate in the engine bay with the new date on, and we didn't get a certificate.

He has apparently called up the gas place where it was done and they have said they will give him a new copy. I'm just not trusting of car dealers and don't see why, if it's that simple, they didn't just do that before trying to sell it.

So, has anyone been given certificates rather than a new plate?

The plate in the engine bay shows the date of installation only.

There is also a plate on the gas tank. This one is replaced when the inspection is carried out and is valid or a further 10 years from the date on the the plate.

A dealer is not allowed to sell a car without a plate showing a date over 10 years ago. If they have, go back to them and get them to have it inspected and certified at their expense.

Regards
