I miss M&S: its a fashion crisis...help

Here on Kangaroo Island, we have one shopping street, which boasts one clothes shop, which is a cross between a school outfitters and Grace Brothers.

 

Trips over to Adelaide (known in these parts as a 'trip overseas'), have not produced the goods either. Back in Blighty I was strictly a Man at C&A/Next/M&S type of guy.

But no amount of desperation for some inspiration in the slacks department at Target, has persuaded me to walk out sporting a pair of their offerings (where you can have anything as long as its black or brown and in 100% acrylic).

Myer seems to be trying to be a down-under version of 'Way In' at Harrods, with the price tags to match.

 

My question, fellow shoppers is: HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING, OR ARE THERE REALLY NO HALF DECENT, REASONABLY PRICED CLOTHES SHOPS FOR MEN IN ADELAIDE AND IF SO PLEASE TELL ME WHERE THEY ARE HIDING, AS MY WARDROBE IS IN DIRE NEED OF SOME ADDITiONS (ie something that dosen't have paint on it). Thanks

My daughter says No Not really ...nothing like it...., You're just not looking hard enuff. Steer away from department stores.... Tarocash maybe or all those small shops down Rundle mall that she doesn't know the name of cos they're Guy shops.....compare the price of David Jones clothes as Myer is the cheaper.

I can see your problem as I grew up in Adelaide. We are returning in Nov this year and I'm worried how my husband will cope as he's really short. He's an M&S man too.

 

Have a look at Trims.com.au. When I was a student at Adelaide Uni all of my male friends used to shop there. They now do mail order as well so if you visited their shops and found things you liked you could mail order them in the future. They do both expensive and cheaper clothes. Their chinos have always been popular. Roger David is another store you could also look at.

PS A friend of mine is a 40 yo GP on KI. I could ask him where he gets his clothes if you really get stuck.

They don't seem to do catalogues here, unless of course its Tupperware (AARRGGHH)

 

what about Ed Harry?, lots of their shops about and the clothes look pretty good, I buy for my brother & husband in there. Have a look on the M & S website, you could order on line and get them sent to someone in the Uk who can forward the parcel on. you can also order on line at Next but they don't deliver here. I tend to use UK Ebay all the time, its easier and most people will post to here, just check the postage costs first.

My wifes a "Jane Norman"/Designer clothes kinda girl. Is she in for some bad karma when she arrives in Adelaide ???

On the mainland SA, the nearest half decent shopping centre from KI would be Colonnades in Noarlunga. There are a few mens clothes shops there such as Tarocash, Colorado, Ed Harry, Target, BigW, Roger David, Fletcher Jones and yes Myer which is not as expensive as David Jones (nearest one is Marion for you). There is also Jeans West type shops for casual clothing. Trims as mentioned earlier is good for specialised workwear.

 

After a while, you just learn to accept what is available and blend in like everyone else. The Aussies don't care what anyone else wears.

 

How long has it since you last went shopping anyway Rov? Didn't C&A close down in the early 90's?? lol

Yep I'm afraid she will have a bit of a culture shock. There's another thread regarding women's clothes shops on here - have a look to see the replies there.

No they don't seem to be into the catalogue shopping here.

Somoene at work recommended GaZMan for work stuff but both DJ and Myer do their own brand gear, which isn't half bad - my advice is to wait for the sales as both stores do some real bargains but it might take you a while to find the stores you like.

 

Outside the city, there's a lot less choice.

I miss the mens shops too, you could always trust M&S for a work shirt, and there was never a need to try on trousers in next, they always fitted. I personally don't like the high street stores here, not because of choice, but because even in the same shop the same size on the label are just different sizes... It's like a lottery if something fits...

 

Nearly everything i get now is FCUK (in the city) or Rockport (at David Jones in the city)... The sales start next month and it's easy to get a rockport shirt for $30 which i don't think is to bad for good quality gear.

you have to get over it, yes next is fantastic but your not in england anymore. melbourne is good for shopping if you can get over there but myer, dj`s, sports shops , surf shops arent bad. good luck
